question to all Greeks

I still don't fuly understand what a transgender person is... Can somebody enlighten me? Is that somebody who has been surgically altered? If so that does offer even more confusion when it comes to ones role in a sorority or fraternity unless its coed seeing that person will have to deal with countless others questioning how legit their membership is.
