Location Augusta University ' Our Health Sciences Campus: 1120 15th Street, Augusta, GA 30912 Our Summerville Campus: 2500 Walton Way, Augusta, GA 30904 College/Department Information The Division of Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) partners with Augusta University to promote safety services that support the clinical, teaching, and research missions on campus. We are responsible for a campus-wide effort to ensure Augusta University complies with local, state, and federal health and safety rules and regulations to provide a safe environment for work, study, research, and patient care. Job Summary Hazardous Materials Officer plans and supervises staging, collection, management, and disposal of hazardous wastes and controlled substances; develops and provides chemical safety training to faculty, staff, and students; prepares reports; develops or revises chemical safety policies and procedures; provides training and technical guidance to Occupational Health and Safety Technicians; and responds to emergencies involving hazardous materials. Responsibilities The duties include, but are not limited to: : Plan and supervise collection of chemical wastes from laboratories, clinics, shops, and maintenance facilities. Plan and supervise segregation and safe storage of hazardous wastes at Material Safety Storage Facility. Coordinate with hazardous waste vendors for shipping and disposal of hazardous wastes. Maintain hazardous waste management and all disposal documentation, including inventories, certificates of disposal and recycling, and waste manifests. : Develop, schedule, and present chemical safety training materials commensurate with needs of intended facility, staff, or students. Maintain training documentation. : Prepare internal and external reports associated with chemical safety program, including reports to regulatory agencies. Develop or revise chemical safety policies and procedures. Provide technical guidance, consultation, and oversight to Occupation Health and Safety Technicians in performance of their duties in support of chemical safety program. Coordinate initial laboratory opening visits, clearance and closure operation with Principal Investigators and laboratory staff. Perform quarter silver effluent testing of film processor waste. Maintain database information to include chemical inventory and Safety Data Sheets. : Plan and conduct destruction of controlled substances regulated by Drug Enforcement Administration. Coordinate with Principal Investigators and Public Safety to schedule destruction. Maintain documentation of destruction of controlled substances and Dangerous Drugs. : Respond to chemical spills to supervise decontamination and recover of affected facilities. Advise individuals exposed to chemicals to seek medical care. Serve as a resource and respond to off-hours emergencies as needed. : Perform other related duties and special projects as assigned. Participates in internal and external special purpose committees and staff meetings as needed. : Conduct annual environmental audits of university buildings and grounds as assigned for Toxic Substance Control Act, Spill Prevention and Control Countermeasure, Federal Insecticide Fungicide and Rodenticide Act, Comprehensive Environmental Response Compensation and Liability Act, Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act. Submits report and maintains documentation. OTHER: Perform other duties as assigned Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in chemistry, environmental sciences, laboratory technology, or related science with three years' experience in management of chemicals and hazardous wastes. Required Experience Experience working in a laboratory setting and basic understanding of chemical/biological safety techniques, employment of engineering, administrative controls and PPE. Experience using relational databases and spreadsheets for statistical analysis of chemical safety program data. Experienced in technical procedure development. Preferred Qualifications Master's degree from an accredited college or university in Chemistry or any Physical Sciences, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Sciences, or related field with two years of experience. Ability to read, use, and comprehend the Safety Data Sheets and working knowledge of chemical storage standards, hazard classification of chemicals and Hazard Communication Standard. Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM)/Certified Safety Professional (CSP). Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities KNOWLEDGE Knowledge of general chemistry Knowledge of applicable regulations governing safe handling of hazardous chemicals and proper handling and disposal of hazardous waste Standard lab practices and chemical safety techniques Engineering and administrative controls for chemical safety General awareness of regulations governing chemicals/hazardous materials Databases, operating systems, and spreadsheets SKILLS Skilled in database use, computers, tablets, and mobile devices Skilled in technical report generation ABILITIES Ability to maintain confidentiality Ability to train faculty, staff, and students in required functions Ability to locate needed resources and to read, comprehend, and use Safety Data Sheets Ability to develop and present technical training Ability to wear a respirator Ability to complete 40-hour Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response Training within 6 months of hiring Shift/Salary/Benefits Shift: Days/M-F (Work outside of normal business hours may be required) Pay Band: B9 Salary: Minimum $48,800/annually - Midpoint: $61,000/annually Salary to be commensurate with the qualifications of the selected candidate within the established range (generally minimum midpoint) of the position.
