Assistant Professor of Practice in Contemporary Guitar

The University of Miami's Frost School of Music is accepting applications for a full-time Assistant Professor of Professional Practice (Non-Tenure Track) position in Contemporary Guitar beginning with the 2026-27 academic year.

Principal duties include teaching Contemporary Guitar instructional lessons, directing live and recording ensembles focused on original music, and teaching sophomore and junior level musicianship skills courses. Additional teaching duties may be assigned based on the applicant's skillset and background. The Candidate will participate in juries, auditions and recruiting activities.

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated expertise in contemporary/popular music pedagogy specific to Electric and Acoustic Guitar performance.

  • Experience teaching non-traditional musicians.

  • Songwriting, multi-genre improvisation, and/or arranging skills.

  • Proficient in notation programs such as Sibelius, Dorico, and/or MuseScore.

  • Proficient in audio recording and editing, including fluency in popular DAW's such as Pro Tools, Logic Pro, and/or Ableton Live.

  • Ability to oversee and/or run live sound for rehearsals is highly desirable.

  • Classroom teaching experience at the collegiate level is highly desirable.

  • A Master's degree or higher in music is required (Terminal Degree is preferred). Equivalent professional experience may be given equal consideration in lieu of a degree.
