I'm back from my vacation with a new calls for submissions. This week I'm looking at the Spotlight on Tor Books from the Romance Writers of America annual conference, as well as sharing other opportunities for fiction writers. The Spotlight on Tor was presented by Heather Osborn, Editor, Tor Romance. The Tor Romance line primarily publishes paranormal romance, all sorts and types. She likes to keep the list diverse. While she’s looking for all sorts of paranormal romance. She likes a strong paranormal theme throughout the entire book. Time travel doesn’t usually fall into this category because, once the time traveling is complete, the book becomes a historical romance. However, if you had a paranormal character traveling in time and continue to incorporate paranormal elements, she would be open to that type of book. Heather is also looking for urban fantasy that would not be found within the romance section of the bookstore. She is drawn to urban fantasy with strong romantic elements, but the romance is not the focus of the story. She’d also love to see an “old-fashioned futuristic romance” with aliens and space. She’s also looking for more light-hearted paranormal stories. Jozelle Dyer is an editorial assistant who edits romantic suspense for Tor. She spoke for a little bit about what she’s looking for. Romantic suspense for Tor should be equal parts romance and suspense. She sees a lot of police officers, FBI and CIA agents, so she’d like to see stories where ordinary people are put in jeopardy. Tor has ALWAYS accepted unagented, unsolicited submissions. Don’t bother sending a query letter. Send the manuscript. If you send a query, you will only get a copy of their guidelines. Please do include a one-page cover letter. Tell a little about yourself and your book. Mention if you met one of the editors at a conference. Include pertinent publishing history, any contest win, etc. Include a short synopsis (2-3 pages) and the first three chapters or the first fifty pages. (Jozelle prefers the entire manuscript for previously unpublished authors and the first three chapters and a synopsis for previously published authors.) Please send snail mail only, to Tor Books, 175 5th Avenue , New York, NY 10010 If you enjoyed this article, Join HBCU CONNECT today for similar content and opportunities via email! |
