There was nothing that she was in need of materially, because her family was very well to do. What Carmen really needed was the support of those that said they loved her, and she didn't have it. She was afraid to speak up because, in her family, speaking up about anything was a form of complaining. When her uncle took liberties with her and instilled fear in her not to tell anyone she obeyed, as she had been taught to do. She was confused because he told her she was special, but she wasn't supposed to tell anyone why she was. She was perplexed at the tender age of six. When she sought answers for the questions in her minds, she received none. She was confused on many different levels because of the lack of communication in her family about forbidden topics. Carmen was always taught that all adults were safe, but what she experienced caused uncertainty within her, and caused her to become unstable in her thinking. The instability of her mind made her doubt everything about herself. She shut down emotionally and learned to suppress what she should have verbally expressed. To make matters worst, she didn't have the luxury of being a child that could express her emotions naturally. Her parents would not allow her to be angry about anything because she was taught to act as though everything was okay, even when she was upset. Many occasions would occur when she was internally frustrated with her brother for mistreating her, but she would have to fake a smile. She even had to submit to her uncle when he overpowered and molested her. She developed a tendency to turn her head to the side as a result of the abuse. Carmen was forced into a position of unnatural submission and she thought she had no way out. The only way she felt somewhat in control was when trying to please her parents through making sure she did everything they asked of her perfectly. She could make no mistakes. When she did make a mistake she paid the cost dearly through even more responsibilities being put on her. Because of the many implicit rules of the house she could not complain about it. The abuse that she suffered from her family caused a disconnection to occur within her. She was paralyed in her thinking and she could no longer feel. After Carmen was molested her outward demeanor changed. She was withdrawn, and illusive. She no longer talked unless she was forced to. She was a recluse and no one acknowledged the difference, not even her parents. She tried to tell them the best way she knew how but they ignored the signs that she was being sexually abused. They were too busy with their own lives and would leave her in the care of her brother. Carmen was in essence alone with no one to talk to that would actually hear her cry. She was a child that had to try and figure things out on her own which led her into a viscous cycle of blaming herself for the abuse she suffered. Her voice was heard, but ignored. Her tears were seen but wiped away as if they didn't exist. She was a child without an avenue of release, who had to fight long and hard for her sanity at any cost. Carmen was and is a fighter. Carmen is me. As a victim of incest I never sought help. I made a vow of silence to myself and I kept it with my life. But I decided at the age of fifty that I would open my mouth and speak about the travesties that occurred in my life. When I made the choice to free myself through speaking out about what happened to me to other women and men, my release began. However, I still craved the acceptance of others, and strove to be perfect in everything that I do. God is still working on me, and I am on my way to being complete in Him. It is my prayer for the reader of this book to know and understand that you do not have to bare the burden of shame any longer. Shame is just a trick to make you miss your purpose in life.
