2009 Mr. Collegiate African American Pageant & National Leadership Summit on Black Males set for October 31

2009 Mr. Collegiate African American Pageant & National Leadership Summit on Black Males set for October 31
Posted By: Frederick Roberts on December 30, 2008

When Damany Mayfield was a student at Virginia State University, every one predicted that he would be a star. Well Damany star shined brightly when he was crowned the sixth Mr. Collegiate African American in 2002.

You can make your star shine bright too in the 2009 Pageant set for October 28-31 in Prairie View and Houston, Texas, with the finals on October 31, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. The pageant is in its seventeenth year and is open to Black men between the ages of 18-28 who are enrolled in four-year American colleges and universities. The pageant is being held in conjunction with the National Leadership Summit on the Black Male, set for October 30-31, 2009.

When we think of pageantry in America, we think of the beautiful and talented women in sequin gowns, swimsuits and talent. Well, the producers of the Mr. Collegiate African American Scholarship Pageant (MCAASP) has been dispelling this imagery since 1990 when the pageant was created to empower Black college men and to counteract the negative imagery of the them as perpetuated in the society.

Contrary to popular acceptance, the principles of character, self-esteem, positive role modeling and services are limited less and the MCAASP officials hope to grow the next generation of African American leaders.

The Mr. Collegiate African American Pageant, the first of its kind in the world for men and particularly Black men, was first staged at Prairie View A&M University in April 1992. The goal of the Program is to eradicate the negative stereotypes of Black men by creating a model of excellence for a positive belief in oneself and race, and encouraging individual and group achievement in the pursuit of excellence. We aim to recognize the achievement of the majority of Black men and with emphasis on reaching back to help the minority.

Candidates compete in the MCAA Pageant for scholarships and prizes totaling more than $10,000, and the opportunity to represent the national program. Competition includes a private interview with Judges, personal platform (oratory), talent, formal attire and on-stage interview and question.

Deadline for application is September 30, 2009. For application, write to: The Mr. Collegiate African American Scholarship Program: P. O. Box 2906, Prairie View, TX 77446-2906; email: mrcollegiate@iwon.com.
