The "N" word

The "N" word
Posted By: LaToia Marzette on July 06, 2005

Why must everyone AND THIER MAMA refer to their friends or any random person as "my nigga" or "that nigga"??? It kills me to hear that. Can somebody please tell me what's the whole point of calling people that. I'm telling ya'll, if we were all to know what nigga really meant and what it was intended for, i don't think any of us would be willing to say it. we say it so much we give other people the right to say it.

Yeah we may think it's fine for black people to say it but i kno if we heard a white person say it we would be ready to jump down their back. they gotta think "hey it's ok for them to say it basically degrading themselves why can't we say it". why say it? somebody please tell me cuz i just don't get it.

I explained only a little of it, but take a look at Megan Hudson's blog "where did NIGGA come from"

I agreed we as blacks should NOT label each other with the same name and with the same deragatory emphasis that was placed upon our ancestors. And because all the negative connotations that society has derived from just the term itself(Thug, Jail, Drugs, Theft), I chose not subject or relate anyone to that text. I'm proud of my blackness and I will not embrace any sub-names( AFRICAN american) nicknames( n*gga) or any name that is not my own.

Well, the "N" word. I know its a terrible word and it was used to hurt black folks and it was used as a terrible label to black folks also. BUT now that we have broke free from segregation (4 the most part) the "N" word is a word within our culture that WE use to label each other. Now that WE have and own that word, we use it in our everyday language because its a sense of security and welcoming, I know it sounds crazy but that's the harsh reality. Now U know when I say "he's a straight up n*gga" or something of that matter, I admit that's wrong and I should use another word to label but the "N" word is a word that will be a part of the black culture forever.

I agree with everyone's perspective but most importantly, I agree that "n*gga" is a term that will forever live in African American culture. Some people may not agree with it but you can't change what's okay for others. I don't get mad or upset when people use that word. I am a young woman and sometimes I find myself using it. However, I don't say it all open, in front of a lot of people. That's welcoming them to do the same and if it was directed towards me,I wouldn't like that. I say it in my own house and my own space. I don't see anything wrong with it. I don't use it in an "inappropriate environment"...
