$1000 VIDEO CONTEST: VA/DC/MD Students Called to Address Domestic Violence

$1000 VIDEO CONTEST: VA/DC/MD Students Called to Address Domestic Violence
Posted By: Tori Allen on October 07, 2009

For many college students, being on campus is their first time away from home. It can also be their first time experiencing domestic violence.

The recent high-profile domestic violence case involving Chris Brown and Rihanna has helped bring the topic of domestic abuse to the forefront among younger, college-aged people. To further awareness, Maryland-based hair care company Diva By Cindy is announcing their “Donate to a Diva Student Video Contest.” October marks National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and students from Howard University are invited to create and submit an awareness video, which will serve as the official multimedia piece of the Donate to a Diva holiday campaign. Diva By Cindy along with local business partners and citizens of Maryland, Washington D.C. and Virginia will donate holiday gift bags to provide a moment of cheer to 250 residents of battered women’s shelters this December.

“According to one statistic, the highest rates of domestic abuse are seen among women ages 16 to 24,” states Cynthia Tawiah, founder and CEO of Diva By Cindy.

“We want to partner with young people to ensure they recognize the signs of domestic abuse, where to get help, and how they can help families who have experienced violence against women and children this holiday.”

Students enrolled and attending an undergraduate or graduate program at a VA/DC/MD college or university will be able to submit a video up to 2 minutes long focused around domestic violence awareness and the positive impact of the Donate to a Diva campaign. The winner will receive a $1,000 cash prize, $100 in Diva By Cindy hair care products, local publicity opportunities, along with the winning video being featured on the official Donate to a Diva website (www.DonateToADiva.com). Entries are due November 13, 2009 and the winner will be chosen by directors from the nine participating women’s shelters and representatives from Diva By Cindy. The winner will be announced by November 20, 2009.
