New Father

Posted By: Lamont Jackson on November 18, 2009 The best sight in the world. 11-17-09 Twenty years ago, I received a call that changed my life. My sister-in-law called and the first words she said were, “congratulations daddy!” I remember the feelings I had as if it were yesterday. • Fear- Will I be a better father that the man that was not there to raise me? • Excitement- I could not wait to get to the hospital to see my wife our new born • Concern- Was my wife ok? Did the delivery go well? You see, all of these things rushed through my mind. I was in Chicago at the time awaiting travel to my wife. I wished I had been in the room with her. I wished I could have held her hand, comforted her. While she slept, my sister-in-law helped with our precious delivery. She was an angel in the midnight hour. Her presence was both calming and supportive in those late hours. To this day I am grateful for what she’s done. When I arrived, my wife and daughter were at her sister’s house in the bed. I greeted everyone at the door, happily accepted the congratulations being handed out. The entire time, I was easing towards the stairs. When I first saw our baby, I just sat there and stared at her, for hours. I was amazed by her every move. When she briefly opened her eyes, when she yawned and moved her arms, how she would rest her head against my chest. It was if my racing heart helped to ease her into a deeper sleep. I remember the first thought I had. “God, thank you for the blessing and please, don’t let me mess this up.” As a father, I have proudly stood by and watched as my daughters have grown from cuddly little amazing bundles to young intelligent women and for this I am grateful. This blog is for anyone experiencing the joys of parenting for the first time. Hopefully, it offers some idea of how as parents, we all want the best for our children. Hopefully, it expresses intent, for new parents, to want their children to experience life as it should be, full of wonder, amazement and constant learning. Hopefully the new parents are able to offer their children opportunities just as rewarding or better than the ones they may have been afforded. To new parents, may I offer this advice? Financial support is always good. However, parental support is always great. Children may or may not understand the family’s financial situation. In most cases, they may not care. If they have more or less material possessions than their friends, they would most likely trade it for a parent they could confide in. In my experience, if you kids know that they have a parent that they can rely on, a parent that could offer advice when they are confused, rub their tummies when they are sick or hold them at night when they are afraid, then they will feel that they have more than any friend with tons of material things. Just being there for your kids will be enough. (Until they start dating that is Ha HA.) Hopefully this wasn’t too preachy. If this helps in any way please share it with your friends.
