GEORGIA WORKFORCE INVESTMENT ACT (WIA)
|
Posted By: Alfonso Davis on March 30, 2010 I have attended a Dekalb Tech Job Fair in September 2009 and a male recruiter at a technology center located near Perimeter Mall looked at my resume and made suggestions. I have a BA degree from Morehouse College in Accounting and I have numerous accounting experience in the last 10 years and more. He suggested to me that I enhanced my resume with technical skills such as Microsoft Cisco, SQL, and Crystal Reporting as transferable skills for Analyst jobs. I felt indifferent at first but agreed to. I was ready to change careers to Information Technology because I have been unsuccessful in locating Accounting jobs in the metro Atlanta area. He suggested to me to apply for Workforce Investment Act (WIA) in October 2009 at the Dekalb Workforce Development located in downtown Decatur, GA. http://www.dol.state.ga.us/pdf/georgia_men... I attended orientation, took the Test for Adult Basic Education (TABE), GA Work Ready exam, and visited 3 technical schools all in October 2009. I scored high in Math and and well in Reading. Then I received an acceptance letter from my favorite choice in mid October 2009; however, he had to revise it two and three times due to "structural changes" at the DeKalb Workforce Development. I haven't submitted my complete WIA checklist packet until November 2, 2009. I haven't received a response until Wednesday December 9 2009 when I was told by emails that I should have received a response either before Thanksgiving holiday or the last day of November. I was "denied" Information Technology training by WIA and Dekalb Workforce Development because I already had a "marketing skill" in Accounting yet I haven't been placed on assignments and worked permanently since I left Washington DC in 2008 yet many employers aren't hiring or becoming very picky. All the work was done in vain. At one time I looked into pursuing a Certified Public Accounting (CPA)in both Atlanta, GA and Washington, DC by contacting to local National Association of Black Accountants for career guidance and a mentor but received no support. I began studying for the CPA exam alone but lost focus and interest especially in the Auditing section and became discouraged. I looked into the WIA Training programs and providers in the metro Atlanta and haven't seen any Certified Accountant or Bookkeeper. I felt hopeless and stuck to the point of almost committing suicide by the holidays. So I decided t give WIA one more and last chance: On Wednesday March 17, 2010, I scheduled an appointment to visit my WIA middle-aged male counselor to apply Systems Applications and Products(SAP) class at a training provider in Dunwoody. He was acting unprofessional and responding negatively to me but I remained calm and his personal hygiene and appearance (intoxicated breath and wearing no socks showing ashy heels). How in the hell as a government employee to come to work like that?! I spoke to the WIA contact person there and she confirmed that classes will start on Monday March 29 once she submitted the acceptance letter to my counselor. He told me that he will contact me about the acceptance letter which I haven't received anything. I emailed him on Monday March 22 and I called his office on Thursday March 25 afternoon to follow up. He said that he would call me before he left the office and no call. I am still without information about the acceptance letter. I would not EVER deal with WIA and Dekalb Workforce Development due to their unprofessional, unorganized, and unethical practices. I value time as an investor than an employee and employer and felt like I have wasted time with GA WIA. Nevertheless, I have a GA Work Ready certification and card but no leads If you enjoyed this article, Join HBCU CONNECT today for similar content and opportunities via email! |
