The Value of an HBCU
|
Posted By: Stephanie Davis on April 15, 2010 On yesterday, I was listening to a broadcast of the Michael Baisden Show while he is on the "One Million Mentors" tour. He recently made a stop in my hometown of Birmingham, AL and was headed to Nashville, TN. HBCU’s or mostly white universities? Are you debating where to send your child? http://www.iseecolor.com/profiles/blogs/hb... The discussion came up about making a decision to attend an HBCU vs. a predominantly white university. There were some good shared experiences given by callers who were either alumni, faculty members at an HBCU, parents, or students who were making decisions on attending a college or university. Here's my opinion on the subject. I am truly grateful to have the 'best of both worlds' (so to speak). At first, I attended a predominantly white university which is known for its medical center and programs related to the medical field. I'll admit, I didn't truly apply myself as I could have and would have succeed in graduating from college. My past experiences taught me on the importance and value of a college education--particularly in the African American community. I later transferred to an HBCU after my ACT scores were submitted. Once I enrolled, I hit the ground running academically. In addition, I had the opportunity to participate in organizations that helped me to shape my leadership skills. I also appreciate the camraderie and long-lasting bonds developed among students and faculty members. I graduated in 1995 and have pursued two master's degrees since then. Some of the best experiences I had in my life is when I attended an HBCU. Seeing social media like HBCUConnect and HBCUNetwork reminds me of how far we've come as HBCU Alumni and there's nothing we can't accomplish. I need to really stay connected with this site more.
