How do you survive being at a Historically black college.

Posted By: andre phillips on June 01, 2010 I am a high school senior in chicago and I'm about to graduate, but i have been wondering how does a young man try to make the best of college at Historically black college. I mean it may sound kinda corny but it's something that i always wodnered about. Even though i have to experience it for myself, but what about the seniors who come from school that are more diverse and not really exposed to how to help advance the black experience. I never said that Hbcus dont hve the samqualities i feel that there needs to be a more better wa to promote in urban and other communites with a wide range of African ameican male and females thats all im saying.

I think one of the great things about HBCUs is that most of them have leadership programs and other types of orientations to help new students make the most of their education. One of the benefits of a historically Black college is that the class sizes are usually smaller, and you'll have more of an opportunity to know your professors. As you complete your courses, some of your professors will be able to mentor you and help expose you to internships and other ways of gaining experience. Unfortunately, many high school counselors don't share information on HBCUs because unless your school is in a predominantly Black community, your counselor simply may not know very much about them. I'd encourage you to contact the admissions departments of colleges that interest you, and they'll be glad to provide information and help arrange a campus visit. Saturday, June 5th 2010 at 12:20PM |

Brother Andre: You hit the nail on the head beloved! College can be a stressful process save math, business and science. But when you graduate, I guarantee you will need your degree to demonstrate serious and long-term commitment toward an objective (helping advance the Black experience). Most folks that I know that slam college have never gone. Sometimes their slamming it is a cover because they may have wish they'd gone. Some slam it from a genuine lack of understanding but I'd never slam any type of education even if it lacks in some areas. We are all free to supplement our schooling and I've been doing it since I was about 16. Now I didn't graduate from an HBCU, I graduated from a 2-year college but people tell me I speak with so much maturity and ask me all the time what college I graduated from. But I smile and say I'm still in college. I'm always reading, studying, research, surfing the internet, writing and working to improve my mind, thinking and decision making skills. Now if a person wants a good employment than there is nothing wrong with attending an HBCU. There's nothing wrong with graduating from an Ivy League college either. Regardless to where you receive your education from whether it be from an HBCU, an Ivy League college, or even from your local bookstore or public library, either way a person should have a high work ethic, organization and time management skills, team working and communications skills.
