What does it take to get and keep a job?

Posted By: Genette Brooks on July 13, 2010 My uncle is 72 and semi retired he recieves a retirement check and still works full time he is looking to change careers from retail to something simple like driving the bus. His wife is 56 and she had a job for 15 years and they laid her off stating that he postion is no longer required. I applied to several local banks and all positions required a HS diploma I have a BS degree, the banks said,we are sorry but your qualifications do not match the positions we are offering, Keep trying. When I had a HS diploma they wouldn't hire me, now I have a BS and they won't hire me. Most of the positions are going down to high school diploma required or only MS or PHD and totally skiping over the BS here in Buffalo. Don't get me wrong you can get a job in insurance or real estate with a BS, but some of the duties on these jobs rquire further training and certificates, they leave me saying what that women said on "Gone with the Wind," "I don't know nothing about birthing no babies." Most colleges teach you microsoft excel, word, powerpoint, some desktop publiher and maybe some outlook or Lotus but nothing else unless you take a little programing or get a certificate some where else. When you get a job how do you keep it. corporate turnover is high, they promise you retirement benefits, but when you get old they fire you before payout. That is illegal but it is done. Sometimes it is a good idea to go into business for yourself so you don't have to conform to other peoples rules or face rejection. Don't be discraged in the job search sometimes it is a blessing that you did not get the job you applied for like in one case a company wasinvatigated and closed for fraud that did nothire one of my relatives, the position you get will fityou like a glove and you will be hapy to come to work everyday.
