Your Invited to Harris-Stowe' Groundbreaking Ceremony

Your Invited to Harris-Stowe

Harris-Stowe’s Groundbreaking Ceremony for Its Second Residence Hall Will Be Held Today in the Emerson Performance Center

Four years from the date in which Harris-Stowe State University opened its first residence hall — the Rev. Dr. William G. Gillespie Residence Hall and Student Center — it is proud to announce the groundbreaking ceremony for its second on-campus housing facility.

Dr. John Silvanus Wilson, Jr., executive director of the White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), will serve as the keynote speaker for this historic event. Dr. Wilson recently delivered riveting remarks at Harris-Stowe’s 153rd Commencement Convocation, held in May. The building, which is funded by the Department of Education’s HBCU Capital Financing Program out of Washington, D.C., will include 200 beds and will provide comfortable study spaces for its residents. In addition, the facility will house the campus’ second dining hall.

Harris-Stowe’s first effort at becoming a residential campus proved to be extremely successful and increased enrollment so drastically, that planning for a second residence hall began shortly after the opening of Gillespie Hall.

“We have had a waiting list of students to get into the residence hall since we opened it,” said President Henry Givens, Jr. “With our campus expanding in so many different ways, we had to have a place to house more of our students who were looking for that well-rounded college experience. We are glad to be able to cater to the needs of even more first-generation college students.”

The $15 million environmentally friendly project is being managed by KWAME Building Group and constructed by Legacy Building Group in its first phase. Architectural services were provided by Grice Group Architects and Trivers Associates Architects.

Due to the weather, the ceremony will be held in the Emerson Performance Center (EPC) Board of Regents Gymnasium, followed by a reception, which will be held in the EPC foyer. The media and the general public are invited to attend the groundbreaking ceremony.
