No Wyclef....now what?

Posted By: torin ellis on August 23, 2010

In recent weeks, we learned that Wyclef Jean had plans would launch a campaign to become President of Haiti. The announcement gained national coverage - even secured the attention of Larry King (live).

For Wyclef, the campaign messaging would be around moving the country forward, education reform, rebuilding of course, and perhaps a bit about corruption. A Wyclef win may have been productive for the people of Haiti, but we will not find that out anytime soon. Haitian officials have declared that Wyclef will not be present on the upcoming ballot.

My wonder is not so much around the Rock Star president that would have been. My wonder is around the rock stars that run among us and how might they slowly amass a voice that stirs up serious change within cities all across the country.

Certainly not suggesting they (rock stars) are not doing anything. Not at all.

I'm wondering (via this text) how they might do more. Is it perhaps that they are unaware of what needs to be done around education reform - that no child left behind stuff, decaying blocks - where one house is habitable, and incarceration rates - sometimes higher than necessary, to name a few.

I'm sure that if Wyclef would have run, many of the readers would have weighed in and offered up encouragement and ideas as to how he might pull off a win. I'm hoping those same readers will call on our local rock stars and offer up doses of encouragement and their litany of ideas as to how we make a run to better our cities.

Not sure if we need a rock star president - most sure we need to effect change. You agree?
