RAMS RETURN TO GLORY: Rams Roll in 58-0 Win Over Livingstone
Posted By: Kennette Burgess on October 18, 2010

WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The Winston-Salem State Rams (7-1, 5-1 CIAA) got back to their winning ways with a dominating 58-0 win over the Livingstone Blue Bears (0-8, 0-4 CIAA), Saturday. The Rams dominated every aspect of the game with 474 yards of total offense while holding the Blue Bears to just 109 yards of total offense in their biggest win since 1978 when former Rams head coach and current WSSU Director of Athletics William "Bill" Hayes led the team to a 72-0 win over the Shaw Bears.

Coming off of their first loss of the season, the Rams bounced back in a big way with WSSU ground game leading the way. WSSU redshirt-junior running back Nicholas Cooper led the way with 175 rushing yards and three touchdowns, including a 54-yard second quarter run. Four of the Rams' eight touchdowns came on the ground. The Rams were also strong through the air with sophomore wide receiver Jahuann Butler, who got a start today in place of injured freshman Tehvyn Brantley, leading the way with two catches for 86 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Sophomore quarterback Kameron Smith threw only 10 passes with seven receptions and a pair of touchdowns. Junior wide receiver Dominique Fitzgerald also had a great game with 175 yards in punt returns, including a 35-yard touchdown return in the second quarter.

The Rams got things going early with a pair of first quarter touchdowns. It was Butler who put the Rams on the scoreboard first with a 33-yard TD catch from Smith at the 7:44 mark. Cooper would add another score with a 23-yard TD run.

It was in the second quarter that the Rams did the majority of their damage with 24 points, beginning with Fitzgerald's punt return touchdown at the 13:53 mark. The WSSU offense would kick into high gear in the final four minutes of the half with three WSSU scores before the half. Butler would get things started with a 53-yard touchdown reception from Smith, followed by Cooper's 54-yard run. WSSU sophomore kicker would cap the effort with a 45-yard field goal at the half. With the score, the Rams took a 38-0 lead into the locker room at the half.

The Rams kept things going in the second half with Cooper powering his way into the endzone on a five-yard touchdown run at the 5:29 mark. Freshman running back Kayvonne Spriggs added a six-yard touchdown run at the 00:16 mark.

With the game well in hand, the Rams capped the game with a 20-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Octavious Hawkins to Jonathan Kinzer at the 4:31 mark. With the score, the Rams capped their scoring and sealed the 58-0 win.

The Rams will return to action next Saturday when the team hosts the UNC-Pembroke Braves in a homecoming match-up. The game is scheduled for a 1:30 p.m. kickoff.
