My Thoughts On Hurricane Katrina
|
Posted By: Darryl D. Smith on September 01, 2005 Just to let everyone know, I'm OK. I am in Northern Louisiana, so all we got was some pleasant temperature (for a day) and some wind. However, my heart sank below my feet once I saw the horrifying images on CNN. It's taken me a while to completely grasp the effect of Hurricane Katrina. This is the most powerful hurricane I’ve ever seen. Florida wasn’t even in this bad of shape. While Mississippi had the worst part of the hurricane, New Orleans got the worst effect of the hurricane. It’s unbelievable. The I-10 (twin span) bridge is dead. I mean, I’ve never seen a bridge just…collapse like that. Earthquakes can’t even do what Katrina did to I-10. My heart goes out to ALL of you that were affected by this tragedy. I mean…it’s hard for me to even grasp the pain that you guys feel, as I have all of my stuff. I know my family is safe. As for you, you’re wondering about school, whether or not your mom/dad made it out, how is your house doing, will you ever return to New Orleans, etc. It’s crazy man. My fellow Gramblinite Michael Grant went out to cover the story, as many evacuees took shelter in Ruston and Shreveport. I’m glad I didn’t go with him. I would’ve broke down, much like the CNN reporter who was on the scene. She didn’t cry, but you could hear it in her voice, because she could hear people yelling for help, but rescuers couldn’t reach them. I wonder if they survived, because the water was rising when this happened. I’m disappointed in myself though. The first thing that really ran through my mind was, “What’s going to happen to the Bayou Classic?” Of course, I scolded myself for it. Ain’t no way I should’ve thought of the Bayou Classic when millions of people are homeless. Man…it’s still a shock to me. I have to call my friends that were affected. If you know me, I have an ex-girlfriend that goes to Southern. I’m going to call her tomorrow to make sure all is well with her. I also have some friends that go to Xavier and Dillard. I’ll be checking on them tomorrow. Man…I’m like still in shock here. I wonder if New Orleans will still exist after this. The reason for this is because officials have stated that the levees cannot be repaired. They are trying to fill the holes up with sandbags, but the levees continue to swell and break after the hurricane. It’s too much water coming from up north as well. I hope New Orleans will still exist after this, because New Orleans is a great city to go to. It’s just fun. It wouldn’t be Louisiana without New Orleans. What surprises me is the fact that New Orleans has been around for hundreds of years before this disaster. How could this disaster do this much damage to a city that has stayed strong for so long? I hope that the USA will find some answers soon. Bush also needs to go ahead and stop acting stingy and send New Orleans some money. His brother Jeb got his money as soon as he asked for it. Blanco has almost begged Bush for help. Let me get off this subject… But I hope all of you are all right. My condolences go out to those of you who lost family members during this tragic event. Please…if you need anything…PM me. I will try to help you. This is something…that will keep shocking me until it’s over. However, that could be a year from now… If you enjoyed this article, Join HBCU CONNECT today for similar content and opportunities via email! |

Hey you know Michael Grant? Do me a favor and tell him to contact me. I was one of the students that he interviewed @ CCS in Shreveport. I would really appreciate it. I would love to read our interview in print to see which parts he chose to use. Thanks in Advance
