A Word in Season Education Services

Executive Summary

A Word in Season Education Services is a New York-based company that offers tutoring services in humanities based subjects. The company is currently a sole proprietorship.
A Word in Season Education Services was founded by DeBorah Ann Palmer back in the 1980s originally as a venue to showcase poetry in a video format. Although the company has informally existed for the last several years, operations have been informal, picking up students here and there. My most recent and successful client to date is York College, CUNY where I will be teaching a creative writing course beginning Feb. 2011. Over the years A Word in Season has undergone several incarnations as DeBorah’s career grew; new skills and talents were developed along the journey. While it has filled some of DeBorah’s spare time, she is now ready to concentrate on developing this business into a more efficient source of revenue while retaining the joy of teaching that attracted DeBorah to the business. The first step of this transformation is the writing of a business plan. This plan is being used as an internal document to assist in the development of the business. A Word in Season Education Services operates with a very low overhead.

The Market
A Word in Season Education Services has identified several target market segments that will be pursued. The largest segments are students attending York College and residents of Rochdale Village Inc., which is the largest housing development in Southeast Queens. DeBorah has close relationships with the residents of Rochdale Village having lived in this housing complex for twenty years and is developing close working relationships with the Continuing Education staff of York College. A Word in Season Education Services is also prepared to serve adult students from local community and cultural centers located in the Southeast Queens area. Using a distinctly innovative approach, A Word in Season Education Services is prepared to assist prospective GED students enhance their reading comprehension and writing skills thereby developing the analytical strategies to successfully excelling on the GED exam. In the future I hope to form a partnership with the New York City Department of Education offering specialized tours especially geared to inner-city Junior High and High School students.

The Services
A Word in Season Education Services offers a specialized creative writing curriculum utilizing art in New York City museums to develop students’ critical thinking and literary skills. Sessions can be set up as private or students may form groups for Educational.

Private sessions offer intense individual assistance, but group sessions can also be beneficial with decreased economic costs and the use of team-based approach that the program encourages.

Management
A Word in Season’s Education Services will be lead by DeBorah Ann Palmer. DeBorah brings a wealth of academic excellence as well as a proven record of teaching. DeBorah first began teaching as a co-founder within the small community based company “Dreams Never Die” from October 1993 until July 1994. My partner and I specialized in software training for adults returning the workforce. Our classes were held in the Rochdale Village Community Center. It was this experience that provided DeBorah with the insight that she enjoyed and excelled at teaching. While DeBorah was employed at United Way of New York City she conducted training on CARES (Community Access to Resources) proprietary Information and Referral database for both internal and external clients. She was an instrumental part of the marketing team responsible for marketing, promoting and training staff of CARES donor, the Human Resources Administration of New York City as the city transitioned its welfare centers into workplace centers. DeBorah also conducted Internet training for United Way staff development and developed a guidebook staff could refer to after training classes.

Company Ownership
A Word in Season Education Services is a sole proprietorship. The company is owned and operated by DeBorah Ann Palmer.

Mission
A Word in Season Education Services exists to help students and the community at large. I take a unique and innovative approach to teaching that helps students connect with the subject matter they need to master. Through personalized and focused teaching processes, my students develop the tools they need for ongoing success in their fields of study. My students’ success is my number one priority.
