This celebration is unique to the African-American and was created by Dr. Maulana Karenga to focus on principles that promote African values and positive, productive behavior within our communities. Diversity and multiculturalism have their place within the human experience, but one must first know self and the legacy from which we as Black people have come. Our heritage and history are unique and should be celebrated and promoted among the African family. When we fully understand who we are as a people, we will better understand our purpose and respect all within our communities determined to make things better for the whole.
