BSU STUDENT CROWNED 2004-2005 MISS NATIONAL BLACK COLLEGE ALUMNI HALL OF FAME

Bowie, Maryland – Miss Bowie State University, Tameka Jacqueline Wilson, will serve double duty this year as she was recently crowned the 19th Miss National Black College Alumni (NBCA) Hall of Fame.

In late September, thirty-seven talented young ladies gathered at the 2004 Competition of Black College Queens held in Atlanta, Georgia. Over the course of a three-day weekend, they competed against each other in four categories: oratory, talent, poise and projection, and presentation and image.

The event is sponsored by the National Black College Alumni Hall of Fame Foundation (www.nbcahof.org) whose mission is to be a catalyst and partner for ensuring the stability, strength and excellence of the nation’s historically and predominately Black colleges and universities.

The twenty-one-year-old Savannah, Georgia native wowed a panel of celebrity judges during her 3-minute oratory and talent segments.

While the contestants were given the oratorical topic of "Historically Black Colleges and Universities: The Roots of the Black Community," Wilson creatively displayed the HBCU as the mother and backbone of the community and herself as the daughter seeking wisdom. According to Wilson, “My creativity comes to me in dreams.”

Wilson’s talent segment included a monologue titled "A Medal for Willy" by William Branch which also won her the title of Miss Bowie State University in spring 2004. Wilson, who was groomed for the competition by her predecessor, the former Miss BSU, felt a sense of confidence, said “Throughout the competition, I felt like a winner. I had a positive feeling and I felt that it was Bowie’s time. It was time to bring the title back home to Bowie.”

Along with a $2,000 scholarship, a 5-tier sterling silver and crystal tiara from the foundation and a gift basket from The Gillette Company, Wilson will carry the crown for one year and serve as the 2004-2005 National Spokesperson for the Hall of Fame Foundation. According to Wilson, “God has blessed me and used me as a vessel to further the mission of Bowie State University and the Hall of Fame Foundation.”

Wilson is a Clinton, Maryland resident and will complete a Bachelor of Arts degree in media management communications in spring 2005. Upon graduation, she will pursue a Master of Arts degree in electronic media and film. In the future, Wilson plans to launch a Christian-based television production company.
