Starbucks is having a celebration and we’re ALL invited!

Starbucks is having a celebration and we’re ALL invited!
Posted By: Tressia Amacher on March 09, 2011

To mark the last 40 years, they are inviting us to join them for Tribute Days. If we go to Starbucks between 3 and 5 p.m. on March 10-12, they’ll treat us to a free Starbucks Petites when we ORDER any handcrafted beverage (while supplies last). When I first read ‘my’ invitation I thought hey, this is NICE.

Then I reread it and it gave me pause. I don’t know it just seems to me that if we [the consumers] have patronized Starbucks for 40 years they should do things a bit differently. Don’t get me wrong I like the ‘sound’ of Tribute Days. But I believe if someone is paying “TRIBUTE” to me it should be without any ‘expectation’ of repayment. After all, tribute is defined as a gift, testimonial, compliment, or the like, given as due or in acknowledgment of gratitude or esteem. And so while it appears that Starbucks is acknowledging our 40 year patronage, in actuality, Starbucks Tribute Days is cunningly securing more profit.

According to USA Today Starbucks is “the world's largest coffee chain — 17,000 locations in 55 countries — made almost $11 billion last year by coaxing some 60 million customers a week to feel momentarily indulgent over a warm brew and a crumbly nosh”.

Albeit, no one has asked me for my humble opinion, I'll invoke my First Amendment Right and offer it anyway.

If Starbucks really wanted to pay ‘tribute’ to their consumers wouldn’t their invitations read:

“…If you come to Starbucks between 2 and 5 p.m. on March 10-12, we’ll treat you to a free Starbucks Petites AND your choice of any handcrafted beverage. It’s just our way of thanking you for your support over the last 40 years - because without you, there is no us.”

I wonder if Starbucks can be ‘coaxed’ into “indulging us with a warm brew and a crumbly nosh” (NO PURCHASE REQUIRED). After all, Starbucks, Tribute Days is a celebration of the consumers - without us, there would be no you.

That’s my unsolicited opinion. What’s yours?
