Posted By: MyHBCU Interview on May 09, 2011 We are honored to bring to you an excerpt of a great and inspiring interview we had with Dominique McDonald, an esteemed student enrolled in the School of Communications as a Public Relations Major at the Great and Prestigious HBCU Howard University. C/O 2014 STAND UP! We will share with you key questions in our interview with Nubian Queen Dominique McDonald such as why she selected her major, her “HBCU Experience”, her involvement in student life activities at HU and the professor that is most impacting her life as a person and a student. THE WONDER YEARS Many people leaving high school do not have a clue about their likes, dislikes or overall knowledge of self. Why? Because maybe they never took time to indulge in what their heart was telling them and simply did what their family wanted them to do. Nonetheless, when asked why Public Relations was her calling in life Dominique proudly stated that “I chose it simply because I am a social person and I want to be the one to help people/companies get to the top by advertising them and helping them present the proper image.” (Quick Fact….“In 1971, Howard University became the first historically black college or university to offer a public relations course.”) THE FAMED HBCU EXPERIENCE If you ever meet anyone who attended an HBCU they always speak about their “HBCU Experience” and start reminiscing . Many would say it is a great experience because it culminates all facets of life over the short span of three to five years. You have the struggle some encounter with financial aid, the energy felt at sporting events, the parties throughout the week and the great friendships you nurture along the way. Many have learned to appreciate themselves more as well as their culture thanks to prestigious hbcus such as Howard University and many others. When we asked Dominique about her “HBCU Experience” she shared with us that “It hasn’t been easy, there have been a lot of ups and downs but I believe that’s what makes you a stronger and more focused person. I have met so many wonderful people whom I have grown to love. My HBCU Experience at Howard has really been amazing, I have learned so much about myself in different ways. My most favorite time so far is definitely Homecoming 2010 that alone was an experience in itself, one that I really enjoyed.” HOWARD U STUDENT LIFE Regarding her involvement in the many student activities available on HU's campus, Dominique informed us that she she shows support for her Jamaican and New York family at HU and in DC by being an integral member in “the Caribbean Student Association, as well as the New Yorkers Unlimited Club.” She is also a founding member of the “HU Blue Crew” a fan base “which helps support all 19 sports at Howard University”. Hopefully other HBCUs will follow suit and support every athletic team that reps their HBCU as well; only time will tell! PROFESSORS IMPACTING LIVES One of our most enjoyable questions in our interview is asking the students/alum which professors are impacting their life the most. Sometimes the response is one professor and others it could be as many as three or four but never zero :) Either way just hearing the strong words of praise and appreciation from the students/alum themselves lets us know that part if not a majority of the “HBCU Experience” comes from those professors and deans that truly do CARE about the students and their well-roundedness.
