Replacing Friends for College
As I sit back and remember the day my family’s car faded further away from my campus, I can’t help but remember where I came from. Detroit, also known as the Motor City, Motown, the “Murder Mitten”, also claiming the title as one the deadliest cities in the Country and obtaining the lowest illiteracy rate in America.
All of my friends had master plans and the drive to put all those years of pencils, books, and teachers dirty looks to use. Yet when I returned back to my home town from college nothing changed. All my old high school buddies were still in the neighborhood, doing some of the same things they were doing before, and I felt the detachment between us because I could no longer relate to the things we “used” to do. So the big question is, what do you do when your path to progression is more advanced than your friends?
In college your brain is no longer just a muscle but more so a ball of clay that is eagerly awaiting a complex, sculpted shape.

So we are trained to think out of the box, beyond the horizons, out of this universe; there is no limit. But trying to use the same tactic with my buddies felt awkward, like it didn’t belong. My thoughts were interrupted by further explanations, and when the conversation got to complex, it diverted to a debate of the hottest rapper alive. It was a new feeling, these people I saw every day, hung with, studied with seemed so different before I left. Now our conversations felt like 6 inch heels on a cobble stone street, filled with lots of slips, trips, and pauses.
Naturally as we grew older our conversations became rare occurrences. I’m sharing this because as a college student, I see change often. I can honestly say I did not see this coming. I thought I would come back home and we would talk until we were tired like old times, but change and experiences combined don’t allow us to be stagnant. It is a harsh reality, change, yet time waits for no man. So as a result we must learn to go with the flow of life and learn when some relationships have reached their maximum potential. We must surround ourselves with those of whom we wish to be like. F4T (Food for Thought)
