Alabama A&M: Milton suspended for violation of team rules (Notes)

Alabama A&M: Milton suspended for violation of team rules (Notes)
Posted By: HBCU Connect Sports on September 30, 2011

BATON ROUGE, La. [- Wide receiver G'Alonzo Milton was suspended from Saturday's game due to violation of team rules, Alabama A&M coach Anthony Jones said prior to Saturday's game.

Milton, who led the Bulldogs in catches and yards last season, did not make the trip with the team. Jones said he hadn't decided if Milton's suspension would be for one game or more.

Torey Smith, who had three catches for 98 yards in last week's loss to Hampton, started in place of Milton. Smith finished with three catches for 66 yards.

Secondary struggles

Alabama A&M's secondary, which limited Hampton to 99 yards passing a week ago, was victimized early against Southern.

On the first play from scrimmage, Dray Joseph found LaQuinton Evans with a 72-yard touchdown pass. Evans caught a pass near the line of scrimmage and avoided tackles by A&M's Derrick Harris and Vernon Marshall and raced untouched into the end zone.

Joseph found Charles Hawkins on the Jaguars' next possession for a 57-yard touchdown pass. Hawkins beat cornerback A.J. Clark on the play.

Late in the second quarter, Joseph found Mike Berry with a 21-yard touchdown pass. Berry beat free safety Rico Porch on the play. Joseph was 10-of-16 for 242 yards and three touchdowns in the first half.

Joseph finished with 308 yards passing on 18-of-28 attempts, three touchdowns and an interception.

Isabelle sees first action

Backup quarterback David Isabelle saw his first action in an Alabama A&M uniform Saturday.

Isabelle lined up in the backfield and was the pitchman on the option, but quarterback Deaunte Mason pitched the ball behind him. The play ended up losing 16 yards.

On A&M's next possession, Mason found Isabelle out of the backfield for a 42-yard pickup. The Bulldogs had to settle for a 32-yard Chance Wilson field goal.

Porch gets interception

Free safety Rico Porch, who was victimized on Southern's third touchdown, got a little revenge midway through the fourth quarter.

Porch picked off a pass from Southern backup quarterback J.P. Douglas in the end zone to keep the Jaguars off the board.

First time starters

Alabama A&M had three new starters along its defensive line Saturday.

Defensive tackle Montay Rover, defensive tackle Jawanza Vickers and defensive end Phillip Harvey all made their first career starts agaainst Southern.

Rover started in place of Preston Nelson, while Vickers replaced Tim Tillman, who was out with a pulled hamstring. Harvey moved from left to right end due to injuries to Clarence Lovell and Melvin Payne.

LSU connections

Alabama A&M took advantage of its connections at LSU to practice there Friday. Henry Harris, who serves as the Bulldogs' director of football operations and equipment manager, called LSU secondary coach Ron Cooper, who served as A&M's head coach from 1998-2001, and school officials worked it out so A&M could practice there.

"They took us through the football building and blowed our minds," Harris said laughing. "It was unreal."

Cooper and LSU defensive coordinator John Chavis coached at A&M, while defensive line coach Brick Haley played for the Bulldogs.

Jones said Cooper was very gracious.

"Coach Cooper and Coach Haley were very hospitable," he said. "It's good to know guys that try to help you."
