|
Posted By: Shauntae Jordan on October 30, 2011 I was wondering if there were any HBCUs that cater to the military personnel, who has to take online classes can't actually attend the sit down classes? - Rina One of the most significant benefits for many distant learners is flexibility. Online education programs allow students to take classes or work on a degree without relocating or sacrificing their job, family, or commitments. A unique opportunity has come available to students who wish to have an Historically Black College and University (HBCU) experience. Florida A&M University, Tennessee State University, Texas Southern University, and the Professional Certificate Center have partnered with HBCUsOnline to provide access to accredited online degree programs, educational resources, and student support and enrollment services to help you get started easier and help you be successful. The benefits of an online education: • Flexibility – Take classes or work on a degree without relocating or sacrificing job • Convenience – You can learn on your own schedule and even continue working a full-time job in the meantime. Even better, you can read and study during the times of the day when you are most productive. • Connection – You will be connected with students from all over the world and with all kinds of experiences. Online courses are interactive, which means you will get feedback from your instructors and peers, and possibly even more individualized attention • Cost - Online courses are usually less expensive than traditional courses, particularly if you’re not financially or otherwise ready to pursue a full degree program. You will save money on travel, books, and possibly even food. • Commitment - No matter what class you’re taking, one of the most important lessons you will learn from taking online courses is how to commit to something and follow through. The benefits to US Military Personnel and their Families: *May qualify for tuition assistance: US Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard or National Guard (active, duty, reservist, veteran or immediate family member) Help for Students with Military Service Backgrounds, such as: • Military Tuition Assistance - offering up to $4,500 a year for college expenses • GI Bill - up to $49,000 for tuition, fees, books and living expenses • State tuition assistance, fee reduction or waivers • Federal Student Aid – loans and grants • Thousands of scholarships College Credit for Military Experience Your years of experience as a military service member may count toward college credit. Also, College credit for military training is granted under standards of the American Council of Education (ACE). The Defense Activities for Non Traditional Education Support (DANTES) system administers the DANTES Subject Standardized Tests (DSST) Program to better support service members’ efforts to claim credit for experience. Your HBCUsOnline program specialist can guide you through all your financial aid options. Source: http://www.hbcusonline.com/About-HBCUsOnli...
