Get A Passport For Your New Job!

Get A Passport For Your New Job!

Globalization has complicated but also expanded opportunities for employment and life experiences.
It has complicated, well rather increased, the competitiveness of job seekers because it has created the profit-motive incentive of outsourcing. Jobs are leaving, increased experience is in need beyond a Bachelor’s Degree, but education costs are still rising. That is reality, but I am an optimist. Globalization has broadened the horizon for Americans with respect to job opportunities, travel experiences, and cultural enrichment. I think colleges and universities are ripe grounds for this exploration to commence. No longer are you only competing with your counterparts in other cities or states in America, you are competing with your counterparts in other countries around the world. As jobs become more specialized, outsourcing continues, and it becomes harder to find jobs, the next best option would be to look at offers in another country. The idea of Skyping or ooVooing an employer in another country for a job interview might seem far-fetched right now, but it will be the norm for people who want to think outside the box for alternatives to an increasingly bleak economic situation here in America.
The pluses are amazing! Think, a new country, new experiences with a different culture, a chance to become bi, tri, or even multi-lingual, and an opportunity to beef up your résumé. I look at the life-enrichment side of it.

In a world that is becoming increasingly mobile, fast, and social, spending a stint of the beginning of your career outside the United States might be a worthwhile idea. You will come back to America with a different perspective of the world and could apply that to your everyday life and share your experiences with others around you. Also upon return, you will be a more competitive applicant to the jobs of your dreams. You may be asking yourself, “Well we already have the Peace Corps or other study-abroad programs in place.” My response is, “Yes, we do, but this abroad experience has a different spin on it…you will be starting your career abroad.” Who knows what life may have in store after starting your career abroad. Try it…you may be surprised what you find. This can apply to any profession. I have plans to explore this option in the future, but just thinking about it and witnessing colleagues who are making that transition excites me.
Think Globally, Act Locally. This world is changing, therefore our mind-frame has to follow suit. Let’s become globe trotters! HBCUs can seize on this opportunity to open up and seek out more internationally-oriented opportunities for their students. Being born in Italy to military parents and travelling in January 2011 to Austria for a conference on Global Citizenship opened my eyes to other opportunities within my choice of career. I also think this is an amazing opportunity for any African-American student, given the history of discrimination in employment practices, some more covert today. All that you need is…a passport and a passion.
