Just How Ready Are You?

Just How Ready Are You?
Posted By: Sondra Lancaster on September 13, 2012

It amazes me just how many students have absolutely no idea what they want for their life or have a plan for making it happen. They aren’t quite sure why they study what they study, not concerned about tomorrow, and have no concrete plans beyond graduation. It’s obvious they’re not ready. Then, there are others who appear to have it all together – good grades, a great resume and personal statement, appealing personality, plan in hand, ready to take on the world. It’s easy to see their potential. However, when I sit and listen to them talk, I wonder “Just how ready are you?” I don’t mean just from an academic perspective, but from a mental perspective. How mentally prepared are you to:
1. Put your formal education on the shelf and get down to the business of truly learning;
2. Put your passion before your pockets by not chasing a dollar;
3. Stand strong against pressure from family, friends, and society about the choices you make in your own best interest; and
4.

Understand that the lesson is truly in the journey and not the destination.

I realize that most young people believe they have it all under control. I also realize that life is about experiences and the lessons we learn as a result of these experiences. I come across so many young men and women who are not prepared or equipped for life outside the front gate of their institution, even though they think they are. When we talk, I often ask what type of life they want for themselves -- spouse, children, house, vehicles, vacations, “enough” money, satisfying career, happiness, etc. Then, I explain that the key is to discover what it will take to turn that vision into reality; and, although they’ve been sold on the belief that their diploma and degree play significant roles, it will take substantially more. It will mean looking beyond the school walls, as much of their education will be obtained without the use of books or a smart board. And, at the end of the day, those lessons will pave the way to greater insight, wisdom, fulfillment and happiness; and isn’t that what you ultimately want for yourself?
