HBCU College Fair: A Great Place To Broaden Your Mind

HBCU College Fair: A Great Place To Broaden Your Mind
Posted By: Anthony Brown on October 30, 2012

Cleveland, OH – The Cleveland Council of Black Colleges Alumni Association, representing graduates and supporters of any accredited public or private Historically Black College or University (HBCU) that reside in the Greater Cleveland, Ohio area presents its 10th Annual HBCU College Fair. This year’s event will take place at the Warrensville Heights High School on Saturday, November 17, 2012 from 9:00am - 2:00pm. The high school is located at 4270 Northfield Road, Warrensville Hts., OH 44128. This event is open to the public to all students and parents. Pre-registration is required for all student participants, college representatives and vendors.

The goal of the fair is to:
 Educate the community about the value of Historically Black Colleges and Universities
 Allow participants to become familiar with a variety of financial aid programs and educational resources
 Connect students to career, internship, and vocational interest and opportunities
 Engage the audience to learn about colleges that were not previously considered

The Council partners with community and state agencies to provide opportunities for students to speak to over 30 HBCUs and educational programs, providing: career interest surveys, common black college applications, fee waivers, scholarship awards, and on-site admissions. The fair will also host college prep and financial aid workshops for students, parents, teachers, counselors and anyone interested in higher education. HBCU alumni are fundamental in the development of this program as they will share their experiences and encourage students that attending an HBCU is rewarding. The ultimate intent of the fair is to increase college enrollment among underserved and underrepresented youth.

Program Partners (to date):
 2013 Cleveland Classic
 Alpha Phi Alpha – Go To High School/Go To College
 Another Look Cable Television
 Call & Post Newspaper

In addition to browsing the college and university booths, education program resources, and opportunity vendors, students will have the opportunity to attend informative workshops designed to make the college transition a little easier. These “Fast Track Workshops” will be beneficial to parents and counselors attending as well.

Fast Track Workshops:
 HBCU Facts & Myths
 Campus/College Life
 Financial Aid - Preparing and Paying for College

According to Anthony Brown, Council President, “A college education is viable option for all students and HBCUs are a great place to broaden the mind.” He continues to say, “We are excited that our program partners believe in our mission and that hopes that every individual will gain a wealth of information about HBCUs, and learn that these institutions are significant in every way.”
