Relationship Abuse: Don't Be Deceived
|
Posted By: Nardra V. Daniels on July 23, 2013 The number of cases of violence within relationships is growing at an alarming rate. The incidence of date rape is reaching epidemic proportions. The fastest-growing form of murder occurs within marriage. Women have resorted to murder in order to escape the constant violence of an abusive spouse. Husbands and wives and girlfriends and boyfriends are killing one another! One of the things that makes women particularly vulnerable to abuse and manipulation is their maternal instinct. Dishonest men frequently capitalize on this tendency in order to have their way. Women are instinctively nurturers, desiring to reach out to nurture, love, and help. All too often, these healthy desires are exploited by men who are determined to gratify their own selfish lusts. In the bible, when Tamar came into that ancient Israeli bedroom, her brother (Amnon) took advantage of her maternal instincts. (2 Samuel 13:1-20). He told her that he needed help. He sought her sympathy. Once she gave in to his requests for help, he raped her! The kind of violent act Amnon performed that night was more than an offense against a young woman. He offended God and society by committing incest. It is still happening today! There is even another form of abuse that is even more subtle. There are men who coerce women into sexual relationships by claiming to love them. Deception is emotional rape! A deceiver may promise that he will leave his wife for his lover, never intending to keep that promise. He may make every kind of excuse for taking advantage of the woman, and she, because of her vulnerability, may follow along blindly until she’s trapped in the relationship. Men who have sex with women without being committed are just as guilty of abuse as rapists. Some women are victims and don’t even know it. Perhaps every time something goes wrong, you think it’s your fault. It is not your fault if you are being abused in this way; it is your fault if you don’t allow God’s Word to arrest indulgence and weakness in your life! It is time to let go of every ungodly relationship. Do it now! The effects of abuse may linger for years. Some never find freedom because they never allow Christ to come into the dark places of their lives. You have got to let Him in! Jesus has promised to set you free from every curse of the past. If you have suffered abuse, please know that He will bring you complete healing. He wants the whole person well: body, emotions, and spirit. He will relieve and heal you from all the damage inflicted on you by your “abuser”. If you enjoyed this article, Join HBCU CONNECT today for similar content and opportunities via email! |
