Wealth and Entrepreneurship

Wealth and Entrepreneurship
Posted By: Camille Daniels on July 16, 2014

I read a blog post recently about the role that HBCUs are going to have to take in the black community in the 21st century regarding creating new wealth through entrepreneurship. When I read that I was both surprised but then I thought, it was kind of obvious. For me personally I know I think about it a lot. I not only think about my own personal ideas for entrepreneurship but witnessing the many ideas talents that so many of us have but don't come together to build on.

It's obvious to me that in order for the very stretched black community is going to survive or just survive the ongoing rough economy we're going to have to find a way to guide and mentor anyone looking to create a business in our communities. I don't know about you but I see so many young or just mature adults who don't have a job who look BORED as can be clearly in need of a job and most of them would want to do something with their time other than nothing. I feel like if there were ways to help so many college grads who have great ideas but need the right support to execute these ideas to help bring back money into our communities.

It's obvious that we don't have to really be as broke as we are if we believed in keeping the dollar in our local communities regardless of race or business but we have yet to figure out how to make the independent mom and pop stores as "sexy" and as accessible as the chain stores. Now, as a shopper I love certain major stores but I ALSO can appreciate and want to support more of the independent shop as well.

IRegarding small businesses t's not enough to just support the small business on the day after Black Thursday or Friday, it's something that should be done all the time. As far as HBCU or black college gradutes from PWI schools need to be supported so that they can begin to help the communities heal and stay in the communities and begin to be the positive and more realistic example of how to be a young, black and successful outside of the drug dealer, rapper or athlete. I have nothing against the rapper or athlete but to have local success like a college graduate who comes back and creates a business that kids can see and bring legal money into the community could change and save so many lives.

I believe we as college grads have the chance and the talent but just need the right support can infact change the aspect of our current situation for the better. I just hope that someday soon laws or grants or some other part of legal suport is out there to help more people of color with bright ideas can get the help needed to change lives and redefine sucess for the better.
