A Wake Up Call

A Wake Up Call
Posted By: Camille Daniels on October 11, 2014

I don't know how many people have been watching these two episodes of the Iylana follow up episodes of the man Jay and his 34 kids, however I do think it has been some really powerful television. As a graduate now I think about the many young people I went to school with. The many young adult men and women on campus and what they brought with them.

When I say brought with them not just their actual stuff or their own bodies I'm talking about the stories that they have, their emotional stories. I wonder how many of them were really in a lot of emotional pain but found new and other ways to cope with ti. I' talking about the ones who didn't go to the offered therapy sessions on campus or group conversations.

I wonder how many people really suffered in silence and just made due however way they could. Maybe they drug medicated or drank or had lots of sex. I wonder how many just didn't have the language to verbally express what was really going on inside. In some cases it might even be considrered a war. A war of fighing the pain while still trying to function.

Looking at these shows it just made me think not only of my own pains but of the many kids that I saw who looked stylish or who didn't who at the end of the day each had thier pains and demons to deal with but didn't feel like they had anyone to talk to No one to describe these feelings too.

It makes me think well how did they get through? What did they do?

Will these shows help them? Are they ready to start the conversations? Are they ready to do the work to heal and forgive and to begin to live better lives? I don't know but I hope so. I believe that this mixed ranged age generations of millennials that have go and also who graduated from HBCUs have been given a gift. But even moreso the ones who are there right now. These episodes of this show I believe can be the turning point for so many but especially for us. In a time where we have so many ways to communicate it is clear we have to get back to basics and get to the root. And these shows are it, but more importantly the message is it of healing.

When I think of the many hook ups and breaks ups that happen on campus and the pain that comes after all that it's crazy. On one one hand, I say "Hey, it' college stuff happens."
On the other hand it's so sad. It's sad because it's becoming more and more clear that we are all in so much pain, wanting and seeking things from people who simply just don't have the ability at the moment to give you what you seek. Of course the same can be said for drugs and alcohol when abused or used and not needed.

I hope these shows can be a wake up call for all young people but especially the college student and post college student. Since so many of us are now the ages where we can start to have our own children we need to stop. We need to think and really be extremely honest about what we are doing and why. The time is now for us to stop the pain, to heal and forgive.

If anything I hope this post gets passed around and talked about. So many need a wake up call so that they can finally begin to live a life that is good and peaceful and with purpose.
