BLACK WOMEN’S TASK FORCE FORUM Associated with Merge Business Development Systems, Inc. May 19-20, 2006 Baltimore, Maryland WWW.BWTFF.COM 410-255-5411 There are non-responsive social agencies within our communities that are being funded, but producing no results. Despite the evolution of affirmative action laws and programs, the disparity in economic viability within our communities is widening. The glass ceiling is not only being lowered, but now even harder to shatter because it is made of plastic. We feel it is time to mobilize the Black African American woman, who continues to be denied the many opportunities that have presented themselves to their white counterparts. The idea of Black women joining forces is formulated by six Black African American women who are frustrated by the lack of opportunities within the arenas of employment, business development and franchise ownership. We are basically tired of being tired. With hatred and bigotry running rampant through our cities; violence, teen pregnancy, drug abuse, and contact with the criminal justice system are still major concerns. The distribution of drugs is one of the major industries within our communities. We want to retain that entrepreneurial spirit, just change the product. We believe in that old Nancy Reaganism of "just say no to drugs". But in order to say no to something, we must offer an alternate response -- a positive one. These six women, with the help of a business consultant, are planning a national Black Women's Task Force Forum to reignite the activism of women in taking control of their own destiny and the destiny of their communities. As we enter the year 2006, it is not enough to keep applauding the accomplishments of the sixties that gave us the right to eat hamburgers at an integrated establishment. We now seek the opportunity to own that establishment. We must also look into the educational process and demand that educators do not lower their expectations when teaching our children simply because of their socio-economic background. These women are on a mission not only to change the thinking of Black African American women within the Baltimore Metro community; but also to bring about a cohesiveness in all segments of the Black African American community. This conference is not based on forty minutes of identification of problems, twenty minutes of the solution and everyone going home pumped with no direction. This conference is based on the implementation process of getting the solution to eradicate the problem. It is the implementation process that has been lacking for years; it has always been the same groceries, just a different bag. We'd like to meet with you and discuss in detail the rationale behind such a conference and maybe even tell you our individual stories of why we came together and why we feel it is necessary. BLACK WOMEN’S TASK FORCE FORUM WWW.BWTFF.COM 410-255-5411 It has been recognized that it is better to “teach a man to fish” than to simply offer him a hand out. In today’s society, women are nine times more likely than men to be single parents. For the most part, it is women who must learn to fish to support themselves and their dependents. However, many women are handicapped by complex gender related issues such as domestic violence, divorce, widowhood, and the inability to break the glass ceiling. That is often coupled with a lack of career direction, job skills, motivation, and even the desire for self-determination. Many women in today’s society do not have the skills and resources to obtain an adequate level of employment to attain self- sufficiency. According to recent studies, by the Center for Poverty Research and Wellness Council of America, employers site the fact that a “lack of soft skills” such as conflict resolution, time management and problem solving are major barriers to many women, especially former welfare recipients and financially crippled recent divorcees. External barriers, including poor access to affordable and quality child care and transportation compound the problem. The need for employment preparedness and career education has become urgent for women considering that the results of the 2000 Census show that the income for families of female headed households has reached a record low. Couple that with the 2001 report from the National Women’s Law Center that states the number of women living in poverty has dramatically increased within the past ten years. The nearly 70% wage gap that exists between female workers and their male counterparts sure suggests there is a need for women to take control of their destiny. An increase in family responsibility for women and an increase in demand for workers who are competent in soft and technical skills, a strained economic environment and a staggering wage gap all converge to make the need for a Black Women’s Task Force Forum imperative. RECOMMENDED WORKSHOPS FINANCIAL LITERACY Workshop Objective: To help participants create strategies to gain greater control over key aspects of their financial future Goal setting Understanding and Repairing Credit Building Wealth Cash Flow Management Creating a Financial Plan JOBOLOGY Workshop Objective: Entrepreneurship • Starting a Small Business • Understanding Franchises • Self Marketing • Tax Laws • Business Communication Employment • finding your niche • Resumes • creating your own opportunities • Understanding Employment and how to navigate the corporate structure • Know Your Legal Rights in the Workplace PARENTING Workshop Objective: Identifying your role Creating alliances, i.e. the village concept Father Mother parenting relationships Belief systems in families Creating a Parenting Tree/Hot Line POLITICS Workshop Objective: Understanding and exercising your rights Preparing for elective office Getting your candidate elected HEALTH Workshop Objective: To help participants to create a strategy to take greater charge of their health within and outside of the health care system. Physical • Preventive medicine, i.e. screenings • Understanding pharmaceuticals • Holistic and alternative medicine • How to communicate with your Health Care Provider • Blueprint for better health • Disparities in health care: bridging the gap in your community Mental • Recognizing depression and other mental health symptoms • Understanding the roles of mental health care providers • Self help groups: creating a model that works TECHNOLOGY Workshop Objective: To increase awareness of ways to improve personal effectiveness and productivity at home and at work.
