Struggling College Student
Posted By: Brandon Young on January 05, 2016

My name is Brandon Young. I am 22 years old and from Birmingham, Alabama. I am currently a Junior at Howard University in Washington D.C. I am pursuing a degree in Sociology with a concentration in Community Development to one day succeed in my life long dream of starting my own mentoring program for youth and young adults. I am currently sending this email to anyone that can help me return to school next semester. After transferring to Howard University in the Fall of 2013, I was able to finally attend my dream school and start my education process. To save money, I decided to stay with my parents in our 1 bedroom apartment to cut down on tuition cost. After living in Southeast D.C for a 2 months, I was robbed twice and shot at while walking home from the metro. These traumatic events occurred during finals week of my first semester at Howard and caused me to have an extreme case of Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome. My constant panic attacks cause me to shelter myself and not return to Howard until after I sought out medical help. This resulted in me failing most of my classes because I did not take any of my final exams.

After being put of Academic probation, my financial was taken away for this semester and has added a greater cost to myself. I have always been a hardworking individual putting my community before myself. from the age of 13, I've volunteered as a mentor, coach, tutor, and role model for numerous organizations. I eventually had to give up my second job because it conflicted with my school and current jobs' schedule. I currently work as a Youth Development Specialist through a non-profit organization called The Fishing School. Seeing as I have always put service before self, this is my first paid job. I teach 5th grade with a focus on Reading, Math and a Life Skills segment focusing on current events. Working with children in my community has always been my passion and that's why I want to continue my education at Howard. I will be the first person in my entire family to graduate from College and I will not be denied an education that so many people have sacrificed for. I am in need of $8000 to pay for my Fall semester and my upcoming Spring Semester. If anyone has any information I can use to help pay this balance, PLEASE REPLY TO THIS EMAIL or call me at 205-705-5607. ANYTHING WILL BE OF HELP TO ME.
