Black greatness...

Black greatness...
Posted By: Jimmie Lee Gibson Jr. on January 31, 2006

February is upon us once again and the "Black History Boom" is set to begin. A boom that has quieted to a light tap in more recent years despite increased media attention. Why is this so? Most people say it is because they have grown weary of the same tales every year. But let us not forget that Black History is created everyday.

The most prominently used names when referring to black history are Martin Luther King Jr, Malcolm X, Madam C.J. Walker, Benjamin Banniker, etc. All great staples of our history, but some feel disconnected from them because they are deceased. We don't have any great black figures living, right? Well if you don't include Smokey Robinson, Mohommad Ali, Louis Farrakahn, Colin Powell, Condellezza Rice, Henry Aaron, and Oprah Winfrey......then yeah, you'd be absolutely right. But this is still too much of the same, isn't it? Then try P.R.

West, Henry Scott, Curtis Haselrig, and Marcus Hunt. If you don't recognize these names, don't feel bad. They are four men in Columbus, Oh that have dedicated themselves to making a difference in the black community.

P.R. West is currently a teacher in the Dublin Public School system who also runs the GCEC (Greater Columbus Education Collaborative). Henry Scott is an assistant principal at West High after retiring as a principal from Eastmoor High School. Curtis Haselrig is a JROTC instructor who retired as a 1SG from the U.S. Army. Last but not least, Marcus Hunt is a barber......and 88 year old man who fought in WW2 and subsequently opened a barber shop that has remained open for nearly 50 years! All four men receive nearly no recognition but all contribute to black greatness everyday.

As always, I appreciate the time taken to read this blog. Feel free to leave your comments or to recognize black greatness in your community.
