MEC Student Runs NY Marathon

Posted By: Hija Chang on November 14, 2016 William Joyette, a 23-year-old Math major at MEC, was among the 51,995 people who started and the 51,388 who finished the New York City Marathon on Sunday. He was the only MEC student who competed, said Rene Bostic, MEC’s director of Athletics and Intramurals. Mr. Joyette, who came to New York with his family from St. Vincent and the Grenadines in 2009, has been a runner since high school, he said. His soccer coach at Paul Robeson High School pushed him to run. “I loved the experience,” Mr. Joyette, a Senior, said of running. “The feeling you, the adrenaline you get when you start. You want to finish as fast as you can, not matter what happens.” He had his eye on the New York City marathon for years, he said. A member of the Track and Field team at MEC, he had already done a few half-marathons in Brooklyn and Staten Island and a 10K in Queens. He runs in Prospect Park, morning and evening, to keep in shape “I always wanted to do it – it’s the world’s largest marathon,” Mr. Joyette said of Sunday’s race. “I put my mind to it.” He even came to MEC “ready to run,” as he put it. His time in the marathon was a more than respectable 3:56:31. Being a numbers guy, Mr. Joyette knew exactly where that timing put him. He was 246th in his age group of 20 to 24; 9,062 among men, and he was overall in 11, 732nd-place, he reported. Although he developed two cramps in the course of Sunday’s race, Mr. Joyette recalled it as an exhilarating experience.
