Start Your IT Career With SQL Server Performance Tuning Today

Posted By: Hayden Beck on May 18, 2017

Do you want to pursue a career in the IT industry, but you aren’t exactly sure where you would like to specialize? Career opportunities in IT have increased tremendously in the past couple of decades, and show no signs of slowing down. Learning SQL Server performance tuning is a valuable skill and a great way to start your IT career.

What is SQL Server?

SQL Server is a relational database management system developed by Microsoft. It is software that stores and retrieves data as directed by other software applications, and it is available in many different editions for specific audiences that need different features. It can run on a single computer or large networking applications with several users. As an industry standard, SQL is integrated into many large systems, and will not be going away anytime soon.

What is SQL Server Performance Tuning?

SQL Server performance tuning is the process of identifying flaws in database queries as well as inefficient indexing, then resolving each issue appropriately on a case-by-case basis. Most often, inefficient server performance is due to flaws in poorly written queries rather than hardware issues. Performance tuning offers businesses the most immediate and powerful results for database efficiency.

A career in SQL Server performance tuning can open opportunities to improve your future career options. Successful IT career professionals have multi-faceted skill sets that often start with SQL Server training.

Do You Have What It Takes?

Do you have the personality characteristics suited to be a Database Administrator (DBA)? Most IT professionals have an eye for detail, are natural problem solvers, tactful, assertive, are good decision makers, humble, calm under pressure, business-minded, and approachable.

After you know what to look for in performance tuning, it takes a sharp eye to pick out the small flaws, assess them, and find solutions to improve database performance. Good business communication skills are important to be able to effectively disseminate information to other departments.

Where To Start

First things first: you need to learn SQL Server.

Certification
SQL certifications are recognized nationally and internationally and speak volumes to potential employers of your abilities. Microsoft has different levels of SQL Server certification that include:

MTA: Microsoft Technology Associate
MCSA: Microsoft Certified Solutions Associate
MCSE: Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert

Technical Training

There are online courses available for SQL Server training, as well as vocational programs through technical schools. This might be the right option for you if you want to see if this is the right career track for you before diving into a college degree program.

College Degree

SQL programming classes are required in most computer science and information technology degree programs. Your experience in SQL Server performance tuning will give your future IT career a solid start. DBAs need to know SQL Server as part of their skill set, and the most qualified also have bachelor’s degrees in information technology or business administration.

SQL Server performance tuning is both an art and a science. Finding the right problems to solve is critical for efficiency, and learning the right skills will make you a valuable asset to any business with IT needs. Database analysts are in demand, and performance tuning will get you on the right path.
