Til Death Do Us Part - When Your Marriage Vows Could MEan Your Life!
|
Posted By: Nea Simone on August 09, 2017 In a move to draw attention the pitfalls of toxic relationships, the filmmakers of the psychological thriller "Til Death Do Us Part" in theaters nationwide September 29th are aligning the attraction of celebrity to raise awareness of the rise of Domestic Violence in the Black Community and the devastation of Black women. They are one of many organizations banning together to draw attention to the devastation experienced by women and children as a consequence of DV. Looking at data from 18 states that included 10,018 female homicides committed between the years 2003 and 2014, CDC researchers found that Black women are killed at a rate of 4.4 per 100,000 people, indigenous women at a rate of 4.3 per 100,000; and other races (white, Latina and Asian) were between 1 and 2 per 100,000. They also found that more than half are at the hands of their boyfriends or husbands. As women we need to acknowledge our role in participating in a toxic relationship and take steps to #GETAWAY! This is not victim blaming, this is the first step to health and wellness. As long as we deny there is something wrong in our relationship that threatens our sanity, self-esteem, or physical well being we make it impossible to get the help we need. Emiko Petrosky, a science officer at the CDC and an author of the report. “Intimate partner violence can affect anyone … states, “We found that approximately one in 10 victims of intimate partner violence-related homicide experienced some form of violence in the preceding month,” Petrosky says. “And when we look at it for the non-intimate partner violence-related homicides, that was less than 2 percent. So this indicates that there could have been potentially an opportunity for intervention for those women.” It is my hope that with the help of organizations, celebrity and films that address Domestic Violence and highlight the warning signs of Toxic Relationships that we take heed. We have lost too many women; mothers, sisters, daughters and children at the hands of the one who is supposed to love them. Til Death Do Us Part is a vow, it should never become a threat.
