Racism and Starbucks
|
Posted By: Victorio Loubriel on April 18, 2018 My View From Harlem, Black is as Black does.. We’ve all heard and are angered by the racist situation at Starbuck’s in Philly. The two African-Americans who were racially profiled, are educated professionals and one of the two is a fraternity brother of Omega Psi Phi. Needless to say, both of these two men were humiliated and embarrassed by the Philly Police department, who clearly didn’t really investigate seeing what had happened, nor spoke to witnesses at Starbucks. All they saw was that somebody White wanted to have two Arican-Americans were charged with Trespass. Instead they handcuffed and taken to the police station and held for 8 hours before finally being released with no charges being filed. And so, do we continue to patronize places allowing people to make antonymous racial decisions, based upon their misguided Trump inspired beliefs, or do we go back to the 1960’s and reenergize the protest, boycotts of businesses and hit them in the cash registers? I published a list of over 50 better alternatives and culturally enriching places in various places to Starbucks, which incidentally offers nothing but overpriced coffee, stale pastries, ill-mannered employees and misguided patrons. This afternoon in Philly, I was at the MKA Institute for Afro-Centric Studies, which I will be giving some lectures in the near term future. Afterwards went to Uncle Bobbie’s Coffee and Books and has my full endorsement, AND African-American owned and operated alternative to Starbucks...... Black is as Black does… Uncle Bobbie’s is owned by Marc Lamont Hill, the award winning journalist and host of BET News and author of the New York Times Best seller “Nobody”. I’m seen here with Anthony Hill, manager and Marc’s brother holding Marc’s book, “Nobody”… It’s a great read about our race, as casualties of America, the war on the vulnerable from Ferguson to Flint. BTW, I bought the book… As far as I am concerned, the convenience of Starbucks, couple with their bad and racist behavior, will never rise up to the enrichment of my mind and the cultural atmosphere of Uncle Bobbie’s. Needless to say, I had two pieces of their sweet potato pie with my great café Latte. If you're wondering, my sweatshirt says, "BISON", Howard Unversity Alumni.. Being Black is more than just my race, its my life style.. If you enjoyed this article, Join HBCU CONNECT today for similar content and opportunities via email! |
