BSU Student Wins National HBCU Kings Competition

BSU Student Wins National HBCU Kings Competition
Posted By: Kimberly West on March 22, 2006

Bowie, Maryland (www.bowiestate.edu) – Christian Shane Lymus, Mr. Bowie State University 2005-06, was crowned Mr. HBCU during The Second Annual Mr. HBCU Kings Leadership Conference and Pageant at Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Missouri on February 25.

Lymus, a senior majoring in communications with a concentration in broadcast journalism, represented Bowie State University and competed among fourteen other HBCUs in four categories: oratory, talent, ease of manner/projection, and presentation/image. Lymus qualified among six other competitors to move to the final round where he participated in three events to emerge as the winner.

“If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always gotten,” said Lymus when he orated on the topic of “Historically Black Colleges and Universities are the Cornerstones of African American History—Black Men the Catalyst for the Survival of these Great Institutions.” Lymus’ ingeniousness and spirituality came to light in the talent competition where he acted out a three minute monologue in which an African American male living in the 1960s was struggling through life. Tired of racism, the character contemplates handling his whole life and existence himself. Instead in the end, he turns to God. The climax of the event and the reality of winning for Mr. Bowie State came when he answered an impromptu question – If you were stranded on a desert island and you could take two things with you, what would they be and why? Lymus responded, “A bible, because you can overcome anything with that. And animals, because I have to eat something!”

Lymus won a $1,500 scholarship, the crown, and a 4ft. trophy as his prize. The 21-year-old Wilmington, Delaware native will graduate in winter 2006 with a bachelor of arts degree in communications. As co-director of the intramural sports program, event host/DJ and WBSU 90.5 FM radio personality, Lymus has loose plans to attend graduate school, but his main aspirations lie in becoming a television host and music producer. He added, “I would like to thank everyone at the university for their love and support, my mother and father, and most of all God.”
