College students are eligible to win $15,000 in scholarships for their efforts to produce a compelling short film about hunger in their communities

The Tom Joyner Foundation and Denny's Corporation, franchisor and operator of one of America's largest full-service restaurant chains, today announced Filmmakers Scholarship program, an initiative created for students attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) to produce short films hunger in their communities.

"You know some of the most successful filmmakers attended HBCUs," said Thomas Joyner, Jr., president and CEO of the Foundation. "Spike Lee. Will Packer. Nate Parker - just to name of few have benefited from the HBCU experience. This scholarship is an investment in future for the next great director."

As part of the program, six deserving students from designated HBCUs each have a chance to win a $2,500 scholarship. Here's how the scholarships will be awarded:
" Two (2), $2,500.00 awards will be awarded to students attending Howard University;
" Two (2), $2,500.00 awards will be awarded to students attending Morehouse College;
" Two (2), $2,500.00 awards will be awarded to students attending any HBCU that is currently supported by TJF.

From Sept. 1 through Dec. 1, full-time students (freshmen, sophomore or juniors) enrolled at fully certified HBCUs can apply for the scholarship. To be considered, applicants must hold a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 to 4.0.

Applications for the scholarship may be submitted via TomJoynerFoundation.org. Students must write, produce, shoot and edit up to a five-minute short film about hunger in their community, particularly what people are doing to fight hunger. The video must be uploaded to Vimeo or YouTube and a link submitted along with the rest of the application by 11:59 p.m. Dec. 1. NOTE: The full scholarship will be awarded to only one student working on the film.

"This is another great example of how our partnership with the Tom Joyner Foundation is stronger than ever," said April Kelly-Drummond, director, diversity affairs and multicultural engagement for Denny's. "We're excited to see what great work these young storytellers will produce."

The Tom Joyner Foundation will be reviewing applications and this year's winners will be announced in August 2019 during the Martha's Vineyard African American Film Festival.

To apply, students may visit TomJoynerFoundation.org follow the online application instructions.
