8 Tips for Students Starting their own Business

8 Tips for Students Starting their own Business
Posted By: Chloe Bennet on May 16, 2019

The idea of joining a big company at the bottom once you graduate is becoming outdated. More and more, graduates are aiming higher, hoping to start out on their own. However, it is not easy to get straight into entrepreneurship.

For one thing, time is short when you are studying and juggling both an education and trying to start a business. Education is getting more and more expensive and business building isn’t cheap, so your resources when you start out are limited.

But there are few tried and tested ideas which can help you once you’ve decided to strike out on your own.

Identify gaps in the market

When you first think of a starting your own business, it’s important to consider what service you are providing. Researching potential markets and competitors will help you identify and gaps in the market that only you can address. Remain open-minded when you locating an industry, you never know when that hobby of yours might be trending.

Find a Mentor

Every business leader needed a push early on. It cannot be overstated how important it is to take advice and as a student, you are in the best place for it. If you’re planning to go into an industry you study, or even if you’re not, the campus is likely to have people who have first-hand experience of your business. Teachers and professors are there to support you.

Plan

Your business idea is only an idea unless you plan how to execute it. Give yourself a dated schedule to have things done by. Build your research into this plan and study your chosen profession and the opportunities it provides. Give yourself projects specific to your area, what you want to achieve and by when.

Network

Though your idea for business should be unique, you should embrace the fact that there will be like-minded people. Everyone needs help to get their business off the ground and networking can provide you with the contacts to seek potential clients.

Find events that relate to your industry, look for talks and lectures where you can meet people who will understand your vision.

Know your resources

For those who start up businesses once they’ve left university, it can be difficult to summon up the right resources. The good news for students is that those resources are more available. You’ll have some excellent places to look for funding, as every university wants to make sure that their alumni succeed. So utilize everything available, from career days to printing services.

Skill up

You are at an advantage whilst you are studying to engage in skills acquirement. Most universities will have career open days or free course to expose you to the industry you want to break into. Studying means you are in the habit of learning, so acquiring skills will be second nature. You might even find that your uni offers entrepreneurship classes, which you should seize with both hand.

Get Experience

On the subject of learning, nothing can prepare you for a business like an internship. Luckily universities are targeted specifically by businesses to get undergraduates into their industry. An internship will give you real-world experience and enable you to prove your competencies. It’s a great opportunity to develop skills and ask meaningful questions which will help you when planning.

Be Cautious

If things are going well it is tempting to start living it up. You may want to discard the champagne-drinking image associated with entrepreneurship early on because businesses need money. Successful entrepreneurs save and budget, knowing that every business requires capital. If you budget appropriately, then you can relax if things don’t go as you planned.
