HBCU Alumnus Create Flawed The Musical Web series

Posted By: Troy Boone on June 21, 2019

I am Troy Boone – a native of Grand Rapids, Michigan. I am a singer, songwriter, choreographer and composer. The arts have always been a part of my life. I grew up singing in church and performed in my very first musical in the 1st grade and never stopped.

By the time I graduated high school, I knew I wanted to go to college but I knew nothing about the process. No one in my household had gone to college so I wasn’t sure what to do. One day I went to see my high school counselor and she had Flags from different universities hanging in her office. I had never heard of the schools but I later found out they were Historical Black colleges and Universities. I was amazed from the start. The two closet HBCUs to Michigan were Wilberforce University and Central State University (CSU) – both located in Ohio. I applied to the two Universities and got accepted into Central State University first. So, I rushed to visit the campus and was instantly HOOKED! I was heavily involved in our music program at CSU but I decided to study Communications, Broadcast media. That was the best decision of my life!

I knew after college I wanted to be an actor. I wanted to direct and produce my own shows. The skill set I gained in college afforded me the ability to do just that. I learned to edit footage, record, write scripts and commercials, create websites and so much more. All the things I truly wanted to do but didn’t really know how, were taught to me at CSU and I am forever grateful.

After college I was ready to move to Los Angeles. I moved home for 3 months and saved up roughly $2,000. I made the big jump at the beginning of 2016. I was so nervous and scared. I hardly knew anyone here.

I just knew I wanted to pursue my dreams and live my life with no regret. I encourage everyone reading this to believe in yourself. Believe in your talents and gifts. Understand that practicing is so important. Spend time perfecting your craft. It will not be easy but no one ever said pursuing your dreams would be. Three years later, I am still in Los Angeles. Loving it! I’ve toured and done a few musicals around LA in addition to some contracted Musical Theater work.

Currently I am working on a show I created called “Flawed: The Musical.” It’s a web series about artist and their personal lives when they are off of the stage. It shows you how they deal with their insecurities, self-doubt, fear and so much more. It’s a very relatable show with a lot of great songs, dance, and a story we all can understand all written and directed by myself. My entire team is comprised of HBCU grads (CSU) who are also all in LA pursing their dreams. The show will release this summer on YouTube.

This project has been a dream come true. This is by far the biggest project I have ever done and has been an exercise of stretching my talents and resources. We’re almost at the finish line and we could actually use your help and support. Feel free to check out our teaser for the show and donate as well. We are currently trying to raise $2300.
There is a GoFundMe link below and feel free to share our teaser with your family and friends!
