The 4 Essential Language Skills – and How to Improve Them

The 4 Essential Language Skills – and How to Improve Them
Posted By: Nouman Ali on February 19, 2020

When learning a new language, we first listen, then speak, then read, and finally write. These four skills are vital when it comes to mastering a language. While some individuals prefer listening to audio tapes to grip a specific language, others opt to read consistently and skip listening or speaking. Everyone has a different technique to learn a new language but to become fluent it is important to master listening, speaking, reading, and writing. To achieve these skills, one must surround themselves with the language all around so it becomes a part of your daily routine. Once you’ve exposed yourself to the language, it becomes easier to learn and communicate smoothly.

Do remember that to polish a skill you need to practice it and as a beginner you must accomplish the four essential language skills. Here we have put together some of the best ways to enhance your language skills.

Listening

You can’t completely learn a language without listening to it. When you listen to a language, you allow your brain to understand the tone and sound of words to improve accuracy. It also assists in enhancing your pronunciation of words and phrases when learning an entirely new language. The best way to improve your listening skills is by paying attention to what’s being said be it in a movie, audio book, or live. You can do this by listening to:

– TV shows, movies, and news, etc.:

This is one of the easiest ways to learn a language and improve your listening as well. You can stream shows online or watch movies on DVD; they’re all effective yet entertaining ways to become familiar with a language. Play it on repeat in your home throughout the day, even if it’s on your mobile phone, you’ll find that your brain will start getting used to the sounds after a while.

– Music and podcasts:

You can select a genre that you prefer and pay attention to the lyrics. Podcasts are also a great way to heighten your listening skills. Just plug in your headphones and listen to the speaker while you carry on with your daily chores. Not only are they educational, but you’ll be finding yourself feeling relaxed as well.

Speaking

This is a skill that requires a lot of effort to develop and perfect. But, once you’ve started joining basic words together, it’s only a matter of time before you start speaking with fluency. You can get accustomed to speaking any language by:

– Voice chatting with friends:

It’s much more fun and productive when you’ve got someone helping you achieve your goals. Voice chat with your friends in the language you want to learn to improve your confidence and develop a better accent. This way you can easily familiarize yourself with the language and work on your speech.

– Talk to your colleagues or classmates in English:

The best place to put your speaking skills to test is with your classmates or work buddies. This could be a simple activity to get everyone communicating in the form of a game or a group discussion.

Even better if you’re doing it while grabbing a meal or just sitting down to have a chat.

Reading

This is a process that involves letting your brain analyze, interpret, and understand information by linking meaning to the words and sentences being read. Reading allows us to grasp grammatical structure, spelling, and sentence structure in the content so we’re able to perform better in a foreign language. If you wish to develop strong reading skills, you can:

– Read sign boards and banners:

If you live in a foreign country and want learn the native language, chances are all sign boards and ad banners are written in the native language. Reading such material is a benefit to those learning to acquaint and settle themselves in a new place. It’s also helpful in scenarios where you might get lost and need to navigate your way home.

– Read books, blogs, and news updates:

In the world of internet and smart technology, you can now read books and the news on your mobile phones – making your journey to learning a new language much easier. Starting with local children’s books, short stories, or poems and increasing the difficulty with comprehension passages, blogs, articles etc. You can download books or reports on any of your devices and install the best pdf reader to easily read, highlight text, and make notes throughout your reading experience.

Writing

Writing requires a little discipline, but if you put your heart and mind to it, anybody can learn. Begin with the basics and if you have a general idea of grammar and sentence structure, it becomes even easier to learn writing a new language. Also, practice goes a long way. Write something every day to reduce spelling mistakes and grammatical errors in your writing. You can enhance your writing skills by:

– Writing down your thoughts in a journal or mobile phone:

Noting down your feelings or opinions throughout the day with descriptive words can help boost your vocabulary and strengthen your sentence structure. Even if you’re just a beginner, starting with short sentences and then progressing into lengthier paragraphs can drastically improve your writing abilities.

– Write comments on social media:

Lots of people leave comments on article posts, videos, and posts from their favorite brands to show interest. It’s one of the easiest ways to show engagement and it’s also an effective way to develop better writing skills. Leave a short review on a product, or reply to a friend in that language. You can even get in a debate with someone in the comments section of a post to get ideas.

Conclusion

In the end, everything comes down to practice. You can’t accomplish anything if you don’t show willingness or consistency in exercising the skills you have attained. But, when building on a strong foundation, you can rapidly achieve results. If you’re determined to learn a new language, regular practice will determine your progress. Start small and easy, then build up the difficulty gradually so you’re able to absorb the information and apply it in real-time. Follow the above-mentioned techniques to polish your core four language skills and demolish any language barriers that might exist between you and your friends.
