#FAMUConnect: Who do you know from FAMU? We introduce you to Mr. Shaun Watson

Learn more about the HBCU Experience from a Florida A&M Graduate, Mr. Shaun Watson! He is a talented Graphic Designer who leads an interesting life. We discovered Mr. Watson on our quest to hire more talent from HBCUs for our Marketing Material Design Projects.
We asked the questions and we hope you are intrigued and inspired from his answers like we were:

Tell us about a time when you were able to call on help from a fellow alum?

During a career change, I applied to a Code Enforcement position in Mangonia Park, FL. I thought I was not going to get the job because I had just come out of the training seminars with no experience, and this job would be my first experience. It was my luck that the mayor was a FAMU alum and helped me into the position.

What is your current career title? What do you like most about your role?

I am a home-based Freelance Graphic Designer, and I love working on projects from home. It's especially helpful during the COVID-19 pandemic. The flexibility of the position allows me to take care of my aging parents.

If someone gave you $300,000 to use at your discretion, how would you choose to dispense the funds?

First off I would leave South Florida, allocating a maximum of two-thirds of the total into efforts and associated expenses of finding a home elsewhere.

Second, I would make investments into new revenue streams using the remaining one-third (USD$100,000.00)--many of which would generate income on their own.
Anything left over I would use in combination with what the revenues stream bring in to fight for better working conditions across the board.

Name a faculty or staff member at your HBCU who helped to make your experience worth while?

ALL of the staff and faculty were amazingly helpful in their own way and I always remember them and thank them. If there was a stand-out, I would say Dr. Patricia McGill, Ph.D from the Continuing Education Department and the now-defunct FAMU Institute on Urban Policy and Commerce. She and I worked together on several projects.

What Professor left a great impression with you? Did you receive any great advice from he or she?

Professor Thomas Rasheed taught me the difference between being a Black person and “acting Black” and how it can be utilized to combat racism in the workplace. It has served me well in all the work positions I have held.
