The Black Mecca

The Black Mecca
Posted By: Kamilah Henry on April 27, 2006

Why Howard University?
The best, most known black college/university
The first-ever black university
Many well-known people went, graduated from HU
Phylicia Rashaad (Mrs. Huxtable), Puff Daddy, Toni Morrison, Ludacris,
Brown vs.

Board of Education lawyer, first black Supreme Court justice graduated and worked with, Thurgood Marshall with NAACP from HU
Known as The Black Mecca (Mecca meaning a holy place, regarded as the main center of activity for a group)
Not just African Americans – student body from West Africans, East Africans, Southern blacks, Northern, Western, Western European blacks, Caribbean, everywhere…
Thurgood Marshall went, and my major is African American Studies with Sociology, with Civil Rights activism
In an inner-city but still a great university – which many people don’t believe
In Washington, DC, where the government is – I will be at protests, internships, right in the middle of the action!
There is a huge family atmosphere within the community at The Black Mecca – everyone is family and is here to help everyone else succeed.
Teachers, people tell me that on the HU campus, there is just this sense of knowledge that when you leave, you just don’t understand how people can be so ignorant. Yay!
People are not competing like at regular universities, it’s about helping each other and getting each other there – together. As a black family.
I want to be in an area/at a school, where I don’t have to search for black teachers, for black examples, for black role models, black history, black books. I shouldn’t have to go from store to store to store and back to get a book for my cousin that has beautiful black girls in the story. At HU, that’s where it is.
Successful blacks, not at the expense of other blacks.
