HBCU Alumna Begins Podcast Amidst Global Pandemic

It’s ya’ girl, OhThatsMeechie!” With a huge smile, Demetria Towns yells her intro excitedly into her microphone Demetria Towns, a young, vibrant, Louisville native, began her very own radio podcast after dealing with the loss of loved ones during the 2020 Covid-19 global shutdown while battling depression. Towns started her radio podcast “Whatz Hatt’N”, as an outlet to discuss various topics, but most importantly to bring awareness to black communities. “During high school, I was still trying to figure out what I wanted to do. Of course, I wanted to go to college, but career-wise it was hard to decide” Towns tells me. “ I’ve been an athlete for so long, it’s sometimes hard to figure out what you truly desire outside of sports you know? Once I began to self-reflect, I realized my love for music! Anything to do with music whether that was being a party DJ, a music artist, a producer, whatever!” Although Demetria found her passion, the big question still stood; what route fit her the best? It took Towns watching tv to figure out her answer. Sounds funny right? “My senior year of high school, MTV began airing the infamous sitcom Martin every morning. I LOVE MARTIN! Towns exclaimed”. “Martin and I have similar personalities. The swag, the way we carry ourselves and we’re both very vocal. I loved how he was still himself at his own job in the WAZZUP radio studio! It was so cool to me and then boom it dawned on me. I wanted to do radio.” Towns is officially a Kentucky State University Alumna of Class Spring 2021 and earned her Bachelor’s degree in Mass Communications and Journalism. Towns has been a radio DJ and radio personality host for two different radio stations: 98.5FM WJHI in Jeffersonville, Indiana, and 98.1FM The Globe Radio in Goshen, Indiana. For the past two years, Towns has been planning her first steps on her own vision, starting her own radio. May 18th, 2020 she announced her podcast show to all social media platforms called, “Whatz HattN”?! “I plan to serve my community via radio, as I have always expressed interest in that field. “Whatz Hatt’N”, the radio and tv production will be a predominantly black radio station company that I will be the sole proprietor of”. In a few years, after Towns gets her radio podcast up and running, she plans to expand “Whatz Hatt’N” to different states, targeting predominantly Black communities. With Demetria’s creativity and passion, she plans to incorporate community service in her love for radio/tv style. Her radio business will focus on the following: News, Business Promotions, Education, Mental Health and Self-care, and Black Excellence. Demetria intends to use her podcast show as a stepping stone to target and serve various audiences on social media to make improvements and connections in her community. “My business has grown from the support of the students, family, and staff surprisingly at my Alma Mater- Kentucky State University” Towns said. “It's so amazing how much support you gain, especially when you attend an HBCU!” Although Demetria supports, volunteers, and assists with various creative projects wherever she can, she honestly didn’t expect that same support. “I always do good and never expect favors in return, so to receive so much love and positivity brought me to tears.” I have so much up my sleeve for Whatz Hatt’N!” Demetria exclaimed. “I’m talking episodes, community events, clothing lines, and even fundraisers for future scholarships and emergency funds for families!
