The College Football World is Trying to Figure Out Why Top Recruit Travis Hunter Chose JSU Over FSU, But We Know Why
|
Posted By: Kennedy Williams on December 17, 2021 Earlier this week, No. 1 high school football recruit Travis Hunter stunned the college football world when he decommitted to Florida State University and proudly decided to attend THEE Jackson State University. Since then, many people outside of the HBCU community have been speculating why Hunter would have made such a decision. It didn't take long for rumors to start swirling around, suggesting that Hunter must have been bribed or manipulated into choosing to attend an HBCU over FSU. Some people have even said that Jackson State Head Football Coach Deion Sanders offered Hunter $1.5 million to attend the school. Sanders addressed those rumors in a recent interview on ESPN podcast Keyshawn, JWill & Max. Sanders said: "I heard a million and a half, and I heard Dave Portnoy over at Barstool. That's the biggest lie I ever heard. You know what that is? That means we kicked your butt, we took what was ours, and now you gotta make up an excuse why. Ain't nobody get no million and a half. I wouldn't pay my son a million-and-a-half on NIL. How am I gonna coach a guy making more than me?" It's crazy that so many people are confused about a young Black man deciding to go to a Black school to play football for a Black head coach. It's even crazier that people feel like a young Black man would have to be paid even to consider making that decision. This tells us that they don't expect us to see the value in what we have. They don't expect us to choose ourselves over what someone else may have to offer. By deciding to attend an HBCU over all of the other schools that were trying to recruit him, Travis Hunter and so many other college athletes who have made the same choice make it clear what's more important. Being in an environment where he is valued and surrounded by people that look like him was more important than the notoriety that would've come with attending a larger, less diverse institution. Hunter, and anyone who has ever attended an HBCU, understands that the education, love, support, and community you get at a historically Black college is invaluable. Kudos to Travis Hunter and Deion Sanders, and we hope this trend continues. If you enjoyed this article, Join HBCU CONNECT today for similar content and opportunities via email! |
