should i let him come to my graduation?

should i let him come to my graduation?
Posted By: Tiffany Marshall on May 18, 2006

ok here's the deal. my father and i never really had a relationship. we talk maybe 4 times a year at the most. it's been real nasty. he just started paying child support 2 months ago. and this is check #9 from him since ive been 2 when he and my mother divorced.

so i contemplated about inviting him to graduation. my mother said that i should...so taking her advice i called to invite him and his wife b/c i have extra tickets.

he told me that he'd see if he can come b/c Jaques (his STEP son) graduation may be on the same day. what happened to me? your first child! my grandmother (his mother) called to ask him if he was coming, again. no answer. sooo...should i proceed to invite him or invite 2 other people?

i was trying to be kind and not act ugly. he's been sick and lost his sight but he's now gaining it back...just trying to have sympothy for the man. no matter how much he has hurt me i still have that soft spot b/c he's my dad and i always wanted to be close to him.

so family, what should i do?

I agree, my (half)sister and my dad are in a similar situation. Realize how much energy it takes out of you to keep a barrier between you and him. Although he's done only a little for you late, you can take now as an opportunity to start a new, unique relationship with him. He may not be the typical profile of a "dad", but you can either invite him as an individual into your life or spend your precious energy keeping him away. I always say, every situation can be a new opportunity. Plus, you graduating is your first step into adulthood and real maturity. The mature thing to do would be not to hold grudges and continue to invite him. And if it happens that he is unable to attend the graduation, don't let that set you back. Be prepared for whatever! Aight girl, my speech is over. Sorry so long, this one just hits close to home for me. ~Angi
