Untold Story of Pioneering Stroud Family: From Slavehouse to Whitehouse

Posted By: FRANK SHINES on July 26, 2022

A documentary, book and opera are in the works by Frank Shines (Captain, USAF) and other Stroud family descendants to tell the untold story of the pioneering Stroud family of Colorado.

K.D. Stroud was born and grew up on a Texas slave plantation until he was 19 years old. He fled to "Indian Territory" (now Oklahoma) to escape violence and discrimination. Here he met his wife, Lulu Magee, of the Creek Nation. A Renaissance Man, he graduated from Langston University, studied law and taught school.

The couple moved to Colorado Springs which had non segregated public education. Lulu and K.D. had 11 remarkable children who went on to make pioneering achievements in the arts, academics, sports, engineering, public service, business and technology.

Race the Opera, chronicles the family story through the true life journey of Dolphus' 2,000-mile trek from Colorado Springs to Boston to compete in the 1928 Olympic Trials at Harvard Stadium. Please see StroudFamilyColorado.com and RacetheOpera.com for details.
