The Value of The UDC Pen Pusher; Irate Thoughts From An English Major
|
Posted By: Imani Scott on December 13, 2023 In my field of academia there is a lot of writing and researching. For the sake of context, I’ve been an English major at UDC for six years. Researching to rewrite what I originally wrote. The constant corrections of words and unsavory sentences. Toying with words to keep the reader from getting bored. Alliteration is like the basil to make the BBQ wings look downright delicious. To be plain, I am observant; and I observed that the pen pushers on this campus don’t get the recognition that we deserve. It is a keyhole onlook into a discouraging professional world that doesn’t value the writer either. Between budget cuts and unsuccessful fund negotiations, I never know which way is up for my department. When I say that I am an English major, I do not receive the same respectful look that the STEM or Business major might receive. The STEM major is appreciated for their ability to study logistics, complex math equations and why your phone won’t turn back on. Business majors are the picture of someone’s corporation with crisp suits and neat demeanors. When my major comes up in a conversation most folks picture that one Language Arts teacher that took Shakespeare too seriously and wore unflattering lipstick. I’m not interested in promoting English or any Arts & Science major. Students should gravitate to what comes to them naturally. UDC has a beautiful building dedicated to Business with a sophisticated meeting room that’s always holding job fairs. Having more participants would help us but that’s not what I’m trying to do with my argument. However, I think that the green pocket paper is the reason my art is going out of commission. The respect stems directly from money. Teachers are poor. Corporations are using AI to eliminate writers. Websites are willing to write essays for us. With this information, of course UDC and a growing number of universities keeps us low on the totem pole. Cold tech makes cold cash. Universities are institutions and institutions need profit to stay afloat. The automaton is the well that never runs dry. I just hope that the venture of the writer still matters.
